Auction description:

1953 Austin-Healey 100 BN1

Estimate €65,000 - €85,000

Artcurial - Garden Party in Saint-Tropez, Saint-Tropez, France

28 June, 2025

Lot 151

Monaco title

Chassis no. BN1-L/145460

- Superb presentation, high-quality restoration, original colours

- First version of the famous "Big Healey"

- Assertive character, preparation inspired by the 100M

As the certificate issued by the British Motor Heritage Trust indicates, this Austin-Healey 100 type BN1 left the factory on 8 October 1953 in "Healey Blue" with a blue interior and was delivered new to the United States. Repatriated more recently to the UK by a classic car restorer, it has benefited from a high-quality overall restoration, documented by a large number of photos. It was then purchased by its current owner, a family of Monegasque collectors, who wanted to be able to use it without any cause for concern and so entrusted it to a specialist for a complete mechanical overhaul.

The appraisal report carried out in 2023 concludes that the car is in 'concours condition', rating the condition of the bodywork, paintwork, chassis, wheels, tyres, upholstery, and interior trim as 'very good'. The presentation is very attractive indeed, in keeping with the aesthetic authenticity of this model, which is emblematic of British roadsters of the period. The car also benefitted from a number of Le Mans kit enhancements, including a larger radiator grille and carburettors, and a bonnet with louvres. The '100' in its name reflected its ability to reach 100 mph, or 160 km/h.

With its robust Austin-sourced 2.6-litre 4-cylinder engine and three-speed gearbox with overdrive, this BN1 combines elegance and sportiness with the assertive character of the early versions of the 'Big Healey', which explains why it is so highly sought-after.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
