This 1953 Austin-Healey 100 BN1 roadster is said to have been purchased new by the original owner through a broker out of San Pedro, California, in 1953 before being acquired by the seller’s grandfather in 1954. The car was repainted blue at some point in the 1950s or 1960s before being passed to the seller in 1976 and is said to have remained parked for the last 49 years. Chassis BN1L147431 retains its 2.7-liter inline-four as well as its three-speed manual transmission and sits on movable dollies with casters. Accompanying parts and components include dual SU carburetors, 15″ knock-off wire wheels, and dark blue vinyl–trimmed bucket seats as well as a removable black soft top and side curtains. Now showing 23k miles, this partially disassembled 100 is offered as a non-running project with a California ownership certificate listing the car as a 1954 model.

The car is believed to have been repainted blue in the 1950s or 1960s. Louvers have been added to the hood, and further details include an adjustable windshield, a removable black soft top, and chrome bumpers with overriders. The seller notes rust in the driver-side fender as well as in the rocker panel below the passenger-side door. Peeling paint, dents, and other imperfections are visible around the body.

The front 15″ knock-off wire wheels have been removed, while the rear units are mounted with older tires that do not hold air. The car was equipped from the factory with drum brakes as well as Armstrong lever-action hydraulic shock absorbers.

The two-place cockpit houses bucket seats are trimmed in worn dark blue vinyl with contrasting piping. Interior appointments include a dash-mounted rearview mirror, a passenger-side grab handle, and door pockets. Removable side curtains are included in the sale.

A banjo-style steering wheel frames Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 120-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 23k miles, approximately 500 of which were added under current ownership.

The non-running 2.7L inline-four retains dual SU carburetors and is mated to a three-speed manual transmission with overdrive.

A collection of spare and removed parts is included in the sale.

Car number BN1L147431 and engine number 1B139453 appear on a white plastic tag in the driver-side footwell. The latter sequence is listed as the VIN on the December 1976–issued California ownership certificate.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
