This 1954 Austin-Healey 100 BN1 roadster was built in April 1954, and the seller’s father purchased the car in Los Angeles County, California, from its short-term original owner on June 9, 1954. The car has been used infrequently since being parked in a Santa Barbara County airplane hangar in 1973. The roadster was refurbished in the mid-1980s with a repaint in black, and the red leather interior was redone. The seller inherited the car in 2009. Power is supplied by a 2.7-liter inline-four paired with a three-speed manual transmission with overdrive. Equipment includes a red soft top, 15″ knock-off wire wheels, dual SU carburetors, a heater, side curtains, and a tonneau cover. The transmission was replaced, its overdrive unit was rebuilt, and electronic ignition was installed in 2018. This BN1 is now offered with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, 1954 bills of sale, superseded California registration slips from the 1950s, refurbishment photos, service records, historical images of the car, manufacturer’s literature, service manuals, Austin-Healey literature, a tool kit, spare parts, a car cover, and a California title in the seller’s name.
The car left the factory in black, and it was stripped and refinished in nitrocellulose lacquer paint in 1985 by Early Motors of Santa Ynez, California, the seller tells us. The removable red soft top has been replaced, and matching side curtains and a tonneau cover are pictured in the gallery below. Other features include an adjustable windshield, a fender-mounted driver-side mirror, black California license plates, and chrome bumpers with overriders. The seller notes blemishes in the paint and a flaw at the passenger door.
Silver-finished 15″ knock-off wire wheels are mounted with 165/80 Kumho PowerStar 758 tires. Braking is handled by drums at each corner.
The bucket seats were retrimmed in red leather in 1985, according to the seller. Interior appointments include red carpeting and trim, a cabin heater, a passenger grab handle, lap belts, and door-panel pockets. The driver seat is worn at a seam.
The banjo-style steering wheel frames Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 120-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 99k miles, approximately 11k of which have been added by the seller. The gas gauge does not register below 1/4 tank, the seller notes.
The 2.7-liter inline-four was rebuilt in 1976 and has dual SU carburetors. Electronic ignition was fitted in 2018, and a spin-on oil-filter adapter has been installed.
The three-speed manual transmission is said to be a late-BN1 gearbox that was rebuilt and then installed in this car in 2018 by Absolutely British of Santa Maria, California. The same service involved rebuilding the Laycock de Normanville overdrive unit.
Historical images of the vehicle are viewable in the gallery, which also contains photos of the Healey when it was featured in print advertisements for Dillard’s department store. The June 1954 bill of sale from when the seller’s father bought the car is also provided in the gallery, as are a May 1954 bill of sale from the original dealer to the car’s first owner plus superseded California registration slips issued between 1954 and 1982.
Refurbishment photos are presented in the gallery along with assorted paperwork and parts that will convey with the vehicle.
The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate lists a build date of April 7, 1954, delivery to a dealership in Los Angeles, and selected options and equipment.
The car’s chassis number is BN1L154409. The car has been titled under its engine number—1B207150—since the 1950s, as evidenced by old registration slips that are included in the sale.
