Auction description:
Lot 623
1956 Austin-Healey 100M Roadster
CHASSIS NO: BN2-L/230753
• A Certified Factory Gold Build 100M with matching numbers engine
• 100M “Le Mans” Registry Certificate of Membership, and a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate
• Just received an extensive two-year nut and bolt restoration
• Restored in the correct black over Reno Red leather interior
• Over $160,000 in restoration receipts included
Production of the 100M commenced on September 5, 1955, and when 100M production ended on July 16, 1956, just 640 examples were factory-built. In addition, roughly 500 "Le Mans" conversion kits were sold to Austin-Healey dealers or car owners to convert standard models to the higher "Le Mans" specification. According to experts, of the 640 cars built at the factory, approximately only 260 are known to exist today.
This very rare, factory-built, alloy 100M benefits from a full body-off-frame restoration by Austin-Healey Club President Gary Feldman and Automotive Artistry, freshly completed and beautifully presented throughout. All receipts and data accompany your purchase, along with the original tool roll and jack. The deep black finish over Reno Red accents is impressive and classic when combined with the red leather interior and matching English wool carpeting. The top, tonneau, and side curtains are likewise as new.
The matching numbers engine, four-speed gearbox, and overdrive unit were rebuilt using all new parts, and the twin 1¾-inch SU H6 carburetors feature polished domes. The original 140 mph speedometer and 6,500 rpm tachometer were restored as well. New mechanical items include a jet-coated exhaust manifold, a new steel exhaust system, brake lines, master brake and slave cylinders, fuel lines and fuel pump, as well as a refurbished gas tank, new four-row radiator, and all new electrical components and cloth wiring harness. Other features include an original 16-inch banjo-type steering wheel, drop-down racing windscreen, re-chromed, original, heavy-gauge bumpers, 48-spoke chrome wire wheels, and a spare tire.
Accompanied by full photo documentation, a 100M “Le Mans” Registry Certificate of Membership, and a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate confirming it is indeed a genuine, factory-built 100M, this striking example is simply superb throughout, and an enviable addition to any fine sports car collection.

Lot #201324
This 1956 Austin-Healey 100M BN2 roadster is one of 640 factory-built 100M “Le Mans” examples produced over a 10-month span. The car was retained by its original owner in Pennsylvania until 2000, and about six months later the current owner purchased the car. It later underwent a restoration that was conducted between 2019 and 2021 by Automotive Artistry of Hudson, Ohio. Work involved repainting the body in black and red, retrimming the red leather upholstery, and rebuilding the 2.7-liter inline-four, the four-speed manual transmission, the electric overdrive, the rear end, and the suspension. A 100M “Le Mans” Registry Certificate of Membership was issued in June 2020, and in September 2021 the vehicle received Gold certification from the Austin-Healey Concours Registry during the Encounter 2021 event. Equipment includes a tilting windshield, a louvered hood, a banjo-style steering wheel, dual SU carburetors, 15″ knock-off wire wheels, a black soft top, removable side curtains, and a tonneau cover. This 100M is now offered in Pennsylvania on dealer consignment with two British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificates, the aforementioned Registry and Gold certificates, refurbishment records and photos, spare parts, a tool kit, and a clean Ohio title.
Restoration records from Automotive Artistry total approximately $158,000.
Finished from the factory in two-tone black and Colorado Red, the car was repainted during the aforementioned refurbishment, which is said to have been overseen by Gary Feldman, a past president of the Austin-Healey Club of America. The louvered hood is secured with a leather tie-down strap, and other features include a replacement black soft top, removable side curtains, a tonneau cover, a tilt-down windshield, a single exhaust outlet, and chrome bumpers with overriders.
Silver-finished 15″ knock-off wire wheels are mounted with Dunlop Road Speed RS5 nylon tires measuring 5.90H15. Braking is handled by drums at each corner, and the drums have been painted black. The suspension system was rebuilt during the refurbishment.
The bucket seats have been reupholstered in red leather. Interior appointments include red carpeting, a painted dashboard, a Smiths heater, a passenger grab handle, and door pockets.
The banjo-style steering wheel frames Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 120-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 49k miles, less than 100 of which have been added since completion of the refurbishment.
The 100M-specification 2,660cc inline-four added larger SU carburetors, an aluminum cold-air box, a higher-lift camshaft, and 8.1:1-compression pistons. The engine was rebuilt during the refurbishment with replacement of the pistons, bearings, and valves. Two six-volt batteries are retained. An aftermarket finned valve cover and a reproduction airbox are fitted.
The engine ID tag matches the engine number listed on the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust and the 100 M “Le Mans” Registry certificates.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with electric overdrive, both of which were rebuilt during the refurbishment, as was the rear end.
An image taken prior to the refurbishment is provided and photos of the refurbishment will accompany the car.
Serial numbers on the cockpit surrounds were captured during the rebuild. Other identifying markings are viewable in photos. The seller notes that the serial numbers on the underside of the hood were damaged during a stalled refurbishment around 2010 as documented in a notarized letter.
The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate shows factory equipment and indicates that the car was dispatched on February 7, 1956, to the United States with 100 M “Le Mans” equipment.
The certificate from the 100 M “Le Mans” Registry was issued in June 2020.
Documentation of the car’s Gold certification from the Austin-Healey Concours Registry’s Encounter 2021 event.
