This 1959 Austin-Healey 100-6 is a BN4 four-seat roadster that was fitted with a 2.9-liter inline-six and a top-shift four-speed manual transmission sourced from a later BJ8 model under previous ownership. It was acquired by the seller as a project in 2017 and subsequently underwent a repaint in dark brown as well as an interior re-trim in black leather in 2020 and 2021. The car rides on a lowered suspension and is equipped with four-wheel drum brakes as well as 15″ knock-off wire wheels. Further details include a Denis Welch Motorsport–style intake manifold, dual SU HD8 carburetors, and a recored radiator along with a later-style grille, wind wings, and a Smiths heater. This 100-6 BN4 is now offered with a red mohair tonneau cover, a collection of handbooks and workshop manuals, spare parts, and a Utah title in the seller’s name.
The body was stripped, underwent repairs, and was repainted in its current dark brown finish in 2020. Work is said to have involved removing damaged metal and adding an aluminum front chin and left-rear shroud as well as replacing the fenders, door skins, rocker panels, floors, and one of the outriggers. A later-style grille, red-finished tow points, and driving lights with Lucas-branded covers have been fitted up front, though the latter are not hooked up. The windscreen wears plexiglass wind wings. Further details include a hood scoop and twin exhaust outlets as well as a single windshield washer jet connected to a glass washer fluid bottle behind the dash. The front bumper has been removed, the left mirror is cracked, and the seller notes pitting in the exterior trim. The car retains a soft top frame, though no soft top is present. A red mohair tonneau cover is included in the sale.
The 15” wire wheels are secured via three-ear knock-offs and are mounted with 195/60 Achilles ATR Sport tires. The car rides on a lowered suspension, and braking is handled by drums at each corner. Service in 2018 is said to have included rebuilding the brake and wheel cylinders.
The 2+2 seats were re-covered with black leather by Rightway Heritage Trimming of Langford in British Columbia, while the rest of the interior was sourced from John Skinner Ltd. in the UK in 2021. Custom black carpets cover the floors as well as the fiberglass transmission tunnel, and further interior appointments include a Smiths cabin heater, a passenger-side grab handle, and door pockets. The horns were rebuilt in 2019.
The black-finished steering wheel is paired with a retrofitted top-mounted shifter with an aftermarket knob and a red leather boot. Smiths instrumentation consists of a 120-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary readouts. The five-digit odometer shows 483 miles, all of which were added under current ownership. The seller believes that the tachometer was rebuilt by Nisonger Instruments under previous ownership and states that true mileage is unknown.
The seller tells us that the 2.9-liter inline-six and four-speed transmission were sourced from a Mark III BJ8 Austin-Healey 3000 and installed under previous ownership in the 1990s. The engine is fitted with a Denis Welch Motorsport–style intake manifold topped with dual SU HD8 carburetors, while a recored radiator up front is paired with a plastic five-blade cooling fan. Work in 2018 reportedly involved refurbishing the carburetors, modifying the radiator, overhauling the distributor, and rebuilding the clutch cylinders. The seller notes smoke at startup as well as leaks from the steering box and engine.
Car number BN4LS74667 is stamped on a reproduction chassis tag affixed to the firewall. The current Utah title carries a “New Title” notation.
