This 1963 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ7 is a Mk II four-seater that was modified with a 289ci Ford V8 and a four-speed manual transmission, reportedly in 1970 before being stored from 1978-1998. A 1999 color change to red was performed while with its second owner, with whom it is said to have remained in Arizona prior to the seller’s acquisition in 2014. Subsequent work included replacement of the front lever shocks and master cylinders as well as installation of a Hurst shifter. An oil change and fuel filter replacement were performed in December 2020. This V8-powered Big Healey is offered at no reserve with service records, a spare wire wheel, and a clean Arizona title in the seller’s name.
The car is said to have been ivory in color before being repainted green prior to 1978 and its current Viper Red in 1999. There are several blemishes in the finish.
Chrome wire wheels are secured with two-eared knock-off spinners and wear 175R15 Michelin ZX radial tires. The black folding top stows beneath a matching boot when lowered. Exhausts exit ahead of both rear wheels.
The cockpit features 2+2 seating trimmed in black vinyl with red piping and features lap belts for all four occupants. Black carpets line the floors and transmission tunnel, the latter of which was fitted with a Hurst shifter in 2014. Period plaques from South Bay Sports Car Club and Riverside International Raceway in California are affixed to the dash and heater box.
The banjo-spoke steering wheel incorporates a turn indicator switch into its hub and frames Smiths gauges including a 120-mph speedometer and a tachometer that has been converted to work with the V8. The five-digit odometer shows 66k miles, 2k of which have been added by the seller including on events such as the British-Euro Auto Tour in Arizona. Actual chassis mileage is unknown. A disconnected overdrive toggle switch remains present in the dash.
A 289ci Ford V8 and four-speed manual transmission were reportedly first installed in 1970 for the original owner, while a replacement long block was fitted in 2003 along with an electric cooling fan. The brake and clutch master cylinders were replaced under current ownership, and the engine oil and fuel filter were changed in 2020.
Refurbished front lever shocks from Apply Hydraulics were installed in 2014. Unassisted brakes comprise discs up front and drums in the rear. Service records are said to cover from 1970-present.
