Auction info:
Fine Historic Motor Cars, H&H Classic Auctions Ltd (23rd November 2005)
1966 AUSTIN-HEALEY 3000 MKIII
Boasting a "mostly aluminium" body, SEU 91D also benefits from a "Full Safety Devices roll cage and 120-litre fuel tank". Riding on 15-inch, 48-spoke wires supplied by Motor Wheel Services, its "brakes and front / rear suspension have been completely rebuilt to 'as new specification' (servo-assisted discs on the front, drums to the rear)". Equipped with Ridgard seats, black "full flat works type" dashboard, 'Motolita' steering wheel, internal battery box, generous instrumentation (aircraft compass, angled Halda bracket, demountable paired Swiss stopwatch / clock etc), cabin lighting set (specific map light etc) and sundry "metal storage boxes for Poti etc", this MKIII's purposeful cockpit is considered to house "every conceivable fitment for rallying". Reputed to develop some 200hp, its 2912cc straight-six engine sports an "unleaded alloy head" (complete with triple Weber carburettors), alloy sump and "full alloy sump shield". Responsible for feeding power to the rear wheels, its four-speed plus overdrive manual gearbox (Tulip type) is allied to a "special 4:1 ratio differential and Salisbury clutch-type, limited slip unit". Duly issued with FIVA papers (No. 016964), SEU 91D has achieved a number of strong results during the current ownership: Rallye des Alpes 2001 4th in Class C Classic Marathon 2001 9th overall Circuit of Wales Rally 2001 Team Award London-Lisbon 2002 Gold Medal Said to have "cost over 75,000 to reach its current specification", this extravagantly reworked 3000 is described by its present keeper as being in very good (interior trim, paintwork) to excellent (engine, transmission, chassis, bodywork, wheels / tyres) condition. Believed but not warranted to have covered 11,378 miles since its Chatham conversion, it is offered for sale with an "approx 150 page fully documented file on history of works completed", FIVA papers, "two sets of spare wheels / tyres", snow chains, MOT certificate valid until 22nd March 2006 and historic class (free) road tax until March 2006. PLEASE NOTE: The vendor has informed us that there are various spares included with the car, a list of which can be found in the documents office.

There is another car in England also claiming to be HBJ8L36293. It has the original engine and gearbox for 36293 as proven by photos of the serial numbers, but a replacement VIN plate. UK registration JTR 39D. Color is dark blue over white, and it is obvious these are not the same cars. Since the blue/white car has the original engine for 36293, the car shown here cannot also have that engine.

36293 was originally sent to the USA, so the VIN as quoted immediately above (HBJ8-36293) is also incorrect since it is missing the "L" that indicates left-hand drive.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
