Car listed as sold at:

Sellers description:
1964 Austin-Healey 3000 Mark III Convertible
s/n H-BJ8-L/25676
Red with White Hardtop with Black Interior

This particular 3000 Mk. III is a professionally restored example in its original colors, done by Austin Healey restoration authority Kurt Tanner, according to the owner. It was sold new in early 1964 via Nuffield Exports of San Francisco, California, and finished in this dashing shade of Colorado red with black interior and soft top. It was thoroughly optioned with wire wheels, a heater, adjustable steering column, a laminated windscreen, and importantly, an overdrive unit fitted to the transmission.

The car has seen very few miles since the show-level restoration was completed, and is ostensibly as-new in virtually every regard. Owing to its longtime dry climate existence, the restoration work was able to be carried out in a "body on" fashion, minimizing any disruption to the panel gaps and shut lines. The paint, chrome, glass and lenses are all unmarked and absolutely beautiful. The car sits on sparkling wire wheels shod with modern BF Goodrich tires which are nearly new. The interior upholstery, dash wood, instruments and switchgear are all in immaculate condition. The car is equipped with a rare factory hard top in a beautifully contrasting white, which is restored to the caliber of the balance of the car, as is the soft top and frame.

The under hood and trunk areas are also restored to show standards. The only alterations known to us from original specification are steel braided fuel lines, and a trunk mounted battery shut off, both changes made with reliability and safety in mind. When the trunk lid is open, it is possible to detect where some minor body repairs had been carried out to the lid itself. The trunk even features a period-style Lucas badged battery.

The car runs and drives as it looks and would lead the new owner to feel like he was driving home from the selling dealer in San Francisco in 1964! Included with the car is the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, a bound Driver's Handbook, restored factory hard top, restored soft top and frame, and matching wire wheel spare with hold down. With the driving season approaching, this beautifully restored and turn-key Healey is the perfect summertime addition to any British car collection.

This 1964 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III was built in December 1963 and was sold new by Nuffield Exports in San Francisco, California. The car reportedly spent most of its life in Nevada, where it was found and refurbished by Healey specialist Kurt Tanner prior to acquisition by the current owner in 2008. The car has been repainted in the original Colorado Red over black leather upholstery, and it is fitted with a factory removable hardtop sourced by the current owner. The car is equipped with a 2.9-liter inline-six, a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive, chrome wire wheels, a heater, and an adjustable steering column. This Austin-Healey is now offered in Los Angeles on behalf of the current owner with records since 2008, a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, and a clean Nevada title.

The bodywork was refinished in its original Colorado Red by Kurt Tanner more than 10 years ago, and the seller reports that the work aimed to minimize disruption of the original bodywork and panel gaps. Exterior chrome trim was redone, and the car is equipped with an optional laminated glass windshield. The seller notes fissures in the removable hardtop’s finish near the badges just aft of the side windows.

The 15″ wire wheels feature a chrome finish and are fitted with BFGoodrich Touring T/A tires measuring 175/80. Braking is handled by front discs and rear drums, and a black top boot is shown in the gallery below.

The interior is upholstered in black leather with white piping matched by black carpeting and fitted rubber mats. The car is equipped with an optional adjustable steering column, a factory banjo-style steering wheel, and a heater.

Smiths instrumentation includes a 140-mph speedometer and a 7k-rpm tachometer. The five-digit odometer shows 65k miles, several thousand of which reportedly were added under current ownership.

The 2.9L inline-six features dual SU carburetors and was factory rated at 150 horsepower. The seller notes that the engine number plate is absent, although the engine appears to be the correct type for the model. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission with optional electrically actuated overdrive. Records are reportedly available since 2008, and the most recent service included a new fuel-level sender and an oil and filter change.

The seller notes that the underside was repainted but not fully refurbished by Mr. Tanner. Dents are shown in the oil pan and on the left-side frame rail, and scrapes are noted on the exhaust system. Additional photos of the underside are provided.

Pictured alongside the included hardbound driver’s handbook, the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate shows the engine, transmission, body, and rear-end numbers as well as the car’s original colors and options.

Spam prevention question (must be answered):
The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
