1964 Austin-Healey 3000 MkIII BJ-8 Sports Convertible
Las Vegas 2013
Consignment # 6049
VIN: HBJ8L 28201
Vehicle to be offered for Auction sale September 26th-28th at Russo and Steele's inaugural Las Vegas, Nevada Auction.
Believed an original California car, this exceptional final-series 3000 Mk III Sports Convertible from 1965 is appropriately finished in Dark British Racing Green with Black leather trim and a matching top and boot. Excellent features include a four-speed overdrive gearbox, a heater, and an adjustable steering wheel. Comprehensive restoration work included a bare-metal repaint and the partial re-plating of the chrome brightwork as required. Mechanical attention included a completely rebuilt suspension including new kingpins, bushings, and shock absorbers up front and new springs, bushings, and shock absorbers at the rear. The six-cylinder engine was rebuilt with all-new components and equipped with rebuilt carburetors and a newer mild-steel exhaust system. A replacement wiring harness and electrical components were fitted as well for enhanced reliability. In addition, a new servo and many other brake items were fitted.
The Healey's cockpit features a refinished dashboard and a complete new full leather interior trim kit from well-respected supplier Moss Motors was installed, including the front and rear seats and panels, plus carpeting and seals. The convertible top is a very nice older black crush grain vinyl top from top-quality supplier Robbins, and it appears to have been stowed most of the time, with few signs noted of exposure to the elements. A newer set of 72-spoke chrome wire wheels is surrounded by a new set of 165 x 15 radial tires to provide the perfect finishing touch. One of the finest driving machines ever produced, it is an excellent find at auction.

This 1964 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III four-seat convertible underwent a mechanical and cosmetic refurbishment in Maine under previous ownership from 2001 to 2006 before being acquired by the current owner in early 2022. Work consisted of refinishing the body in green, reupholstering the cabin in black leather, and rebuilding the 2.9-liter inline-six and the four-speed manual transmission and overdrive unit. Additional work consisted of installing a black convertible top, refreshing the suspension and braking systems, and replacing the wiring harness. Other equipment includes chrome 72-spoke wire wheels, twin SU carburetors, a luggage rack, wood trim, and an adjustable steering column. This 3000 BJ8 is now offered on dealer consignment in Pennsylvania with refurbishment records and photos, a picnic basket, a reproduction driver’s handbook, a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, and a clean Florida title.
The car was finished from the factory in British Racing Green and was repainted during the aforementioned refurbishment. A replacement Everflex black convertible top and boot top were installed, and the chrome bumpers and trim are said to have been refinished or replaced. Equipment includes an Amarcord luggage rack, dual fender-mounted side mirrors, vented front quarter windows, and dual exhaust outlets.
Chrome-finished 72-spoke 15″ wire wheels are fitted with 165-series Ultra Metric radial tires. A BFGoodrich spare tire on a painted 48-spoke wire wheel is stored in the trunk. The suspension is said to have been overhauled during the refurbishment along with the braking system, which utilizes front discs and rear drums.
The replacement black leather upholstery is complemented by a matching center console and door panels as well as a wood dashboard and a black dash top. The carpeting was replaced, and additional equipment includes lap seatbelts, a center console, a locking glovebox, and a heater.
The banjo-style steering wheel shows cracks and is affixed to an adjustable steering column. Smiths instrumentation includes a 140-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and gauges for fuel level, water temperature, and oil pressure. The five-digit odometer shows 2,500 miles, approximately 800 of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.
The 2.9L inline-six features dual SU carburetors and was factory rated at 150 horsepower. The engine was rebuilt under previous ownership, and a replacement wiring harness was installed. An oil change was performed in anticipation of the sale.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with switch-activated overdrive that was rebuilt by Tsikuris Classics in Lakeland, Florida. A stainless-steel exhaust system has also been added.
The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate shows component numbers, colors, options, and an August 14, 1964 dispatch date to the United States.
A picnic basket with utensils will accompany the vehicle along with a reproduction driver’s handbook and refurbishment records and photos.
