This 1965 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III is a running project that was purchased by the seller’s grandfather in 1975 and was inherited by the seller following her grandmother’s passing in 2017. The car is finished in blue over black upholstery and is powered by a 2.9-liter inline-six mated to a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive. Equipment includes a black soft top, driving lights, dual side mirrors, 15″ wire wheels, power-assisted front disc brakes, a banjo-style steering wheel, and dual SU carburetors. Service in February 2023 consisted of tuning the carburetors, replacing ignition components, and getting the engine running. The car has been stored since 2007, and the seller recommends further attention to the fueling system, tires, brakes, clutch, and interior. This 3000 BJ8 is now offered by the seller on behalf of their late grandmother’s estate with a spare engine and other parts, owner’s and repair manuals, records dating back to the late 1970s, and a Virginia title in the name of the seller’s grandmother’s estate.
The car is finished in metallic blue and is equipped with a black soft top, driving lights, a hood scoop, a cowl-mounted antenna, dual fender-mounted side mirrors, and chrome bumpers with overriders. A scratch is present below the rear badge on the trunk lid.
Silver-painted 15” wire wheels wear two-eared knock-off spinners and are mounted with 165-width Michelin XAS radial tires that should be replaced due to age. A spare is located in the trunk. The car has power-assisted front disc and rear drum brakes, and the seller notes that the braking system should be serviced before the vehicle is driven.
The front bucket seats and rear cushions are upholstered in black vinyl. Interior details include a heater, a locking glovebox, and front lap belts. Cracks are noted in the wood dashboard trim, and the carpeting, center trim, shift knob, and rearview mirror have been removed.
The banjo-style steering wheel features an aftermarket wrap and frames Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 140-mph speedometer, a tachometer, a fuel-level gauge, and a combination gauge for monitoring oil pressure and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 25k miles, and the total mileage is unknown.
The 2.9-liter inline-six is equipped with dual SU carburetors. Service performed by Abacus Racing of Virginia Beach, Virginia in February 2023 involved freeing the engine and the water pump, unsticking an intake valve, resealing the valve cover, cleaning and adjusting the carburetors, and setting the timing as well as replacing the ignition points, rotor, condenser, and the carburetor floats. The engine last ran during that service visit, when it was connected to a temporary battery and an external fuel source. Video footage of the engine running is provided below.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive, and the seller notes that the clutch hydraulics require attention.
Repair manuals, spare parts and trim, wheel covers, and recent service records will accompany the vehicle along with paperwork collected since the late 1970s.
A spare engine that is housed in a wooden crate on wheels is also included in the sale.
The title describes the vehicle as a 1965 Austin-Healey four-door sedan.
