This 1965 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III is powered by a 2.9-liter inline-six mated to a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive, and it is finished in red over black upholstery. Equipment includes a black soft top, bright-finished bumpers and trim, fender-mounted mirrors, 15″ wire wheels, a heater, and wood veneer trim. The seller acquired the car in 2012, and subsequent work is said to have consisted of replacing the clutch and driveshaft, performing a valve adjustment, and rebuilding the distributor, carburetors, and suspension. This BJ8 Mk III is now offered with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate, service records, and a Massachusetts title in the seller’s name.

The car left the factory finished in British Racing Green and was repainted in its current shade of red under previous ownership. The seller notes additional bodywork may have been performed at that time. Exterior details include a black soft top and boot, fender-mounted mirrors, bright-finished trim, and chrome-finished bumpers with overriders. Tears in the soft top are visible.

Chrome-finished 15″ knock-off wire wheels are mounted with 185-series Universal Sport tires. The seller states the steering box was rebuilt, and the bushings, seals, tie rod ends, idler arms, leaf springs, and wheel bearings were replaced, under current ownership.

The 2+2 cabin features front bucket seats upholstered in black with contrasting piping. Amenities include wood veneer dashboard trim, a heater, a dash-mounted rearview mirror, a wooden shift knob, rubber floor mats, and quarter vent windows. The driver’s seat is tapped, and the center armrest is damaged.

A banjo-style steering wheel sits ahead of Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 140-mph speedometer, a tachometer with a 5,500-rpm redline, a combination gauge indicating coolant temperature and oil pressure, and a fuel-level gauge. The five-digit odometer shows 2,400 miles, while the seller states approximately 10k miles have been added under current ownership. True mileage is unknown.

The 2.9-liter inline-six is equipped with dual SU carburetors and was factory rated at 150 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque. Work under current ownership is said to have included rebuilding the distributor and carburetors in addition to milling the head surfaces, performing a valve adjustment, and replacing the valves, springs, and seals. The seller notes leaks at the engine timing cover and oil pan.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with an electrically actuated overdrive unit. The clutch and driveshaft were reportedly replaced, along with a differential rebuild, under current ownership.

The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate shows build dates of October 26-27, 1964, and lists factory colors, equipment, and identification numbers.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
