This 1965 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III underwent a repaint in red and an interior re-trim in black leather before being acquired by the seller in 2016. Subsequent work involved overhauls of the suspension and brakes in 2016 along with rebuilds of the 2.9-liter inline-six and four-speed manual transmission in 2017. The car rides on 15″ knock-off wire wheels and is equipped with front disc brakes with cross-drilled rotors. It wears an ivory-finished hardtop and features a hood scoop along with Lucas tri-bar headlamps. Inside, 2+2 seats are accompanied by a Moto-Lita steering wheel and a Custom Autosound digital media receiver. The engine breathes through dual SU carburetors and is fitted with an aluminum cylinder head, camshaft, intake manifold, and six-branch exhaust header from Dennis Welch Motorsport. This 3000 Mk III is now offered in New Mexico with a black soft top and tonneau cover as well as a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, a driver’s handbook, partial service records, a collection of spare and removed parts, and a clean Montana title in the name of the seller’s LLC.
Factory finished in Colorado Red (RD2), the body was repainted under previous ownership. The car is accompanied by a removable black soft top and tonneau cover as well as an ivory-finished hardtop. Lucas tri-bar headlamps have been added up front, and further details include a hood scoop, a fender-mounted left-side mirror, and chrome bumpers with overriders. Paint protection film is said to have been applied to the front of the car in June 2018. The seller notes a chip in the corner of the windshield.
The 15″ wire wheels are secured with two-ear knock-offs and mounted with 185-series Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. Braking is handled by front discs and rear drums. Work in 2016 involved:
Rebuilding the brake servo and shocks
Adding cross-drilled front brake rotors and stainless-steel hoses
Replacing the wheels as well as the front wheel bearings and brake pads
The 2+2 cabin features bucket seats that were re-trimmed in black leather with red piping under previous ownership. Color-coordinated upholstery extends the center tunnel as well as the door panels. A Custom Autosound digital media receiver is connected to aftermarket speakers below the dash, and further appointments include a cabin heater, a locking glovebox, and front lap belts.
The Moto-Lita steering wheel fronts a wood dash housing Smiths black-dial instrumentation that consists of a 140-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, a fuel-level gauge, and a combination gauge displaying oil pressure and water temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 24k miles, approximately 10k of which have been added under current ownership. The seller states that true mileage is unknown.
The 2.9-liter inline-six featured dual SU HD8 carburetors from the factory for a rating of 150 horsepower and 173 lb-ft of torque. This unit was fitted with an aluminum cylinder head, camshaft kit, intake manifold, a six-branch exhaust header, CSI Ignition distributor, high-torque starter motor, B&M crankshaft damper, and JE pistons from Dennis Welch Motorsport as part of a rebuild completed by T’s Sunrise of Englewood, Colorado, in September 2017. Additional work under current ownership is noted to have involved:
Installing a spin-on oil filter adapter in January 2016
Rebuilding the radiator in June 2016
Rebuilding the carburetors in September 2016
Replacing the wiring harness in March 2017
Replacing the ignition wires in October 2018
Installing a Moss fuel pump in May 2019
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with Laycock de Normanville electric overdrive. A replacement clutch assembly was installed in October 2016, and the transmission was rebuilt by Fourintune of Cedarburg, Wisconsin, in July 2018.
The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate lists factory colors and equipment along with a build date in January 1965.
A driver’s handbook, partial service records, and a collection of spare and removed parts will also accompany the car.
