This 1966 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III was acquired by the current owner in 1968 and has since remained registered in California. The car is finished in black over a blue interior, and power is supplied by a 2.9-liter inline-six mated to a four-speed manual transmission, both of which were overhauled in July 2021. Equipment includes an electronically actuated overdrive unit, a black soft top and boot cover, 15” wire wheels, front disc brakes, and a Sony cassette radio. Additional work carried out in the last year consisted of rebuilding the temperature and fuel level gauges, refreshing the cooling system, and replacing the exhaust system, choke cable, and spark plugs. This 3000 BJ8 is now offered at no reserve by the seller on behalf of the current owner with service records, historical photos of the vehicle, and a clean California title.
Previously finished in blue, the car was repainted its current shade of black during the late 1970s. Features include a black soft top and matching boot cover, a driver-side mirror, vent windows, twin exhaust outlets, and chrome bumpers and trim.
Silver-painted 15” wire spoke wheels wear two-eared knock-off spinners and are mounted with 165-width Michelin XZX tires. A spare wrapped with an older tire is housed in the trunk. Stopping power is provided by disc brakes up front and drums out back.
The 2+2 cabin features seating surfaces trimmed in blue upholstery along with matching door panels. Appointments include a Sony cassette radio, a woodgrain shift knob, lap belts for all occupants, and a dash-mounted rearview mirror. Cracks are evident on the dashboard wood trim.
The banjo-style steering wheel fronts a 140-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, and gauges monitoring water temperature and fuel level, both of which were rebuilt in November 2021. The five-digit odometer has rolled over and currently shows 59k miles, though total mileage is unknown.
The 2.9-liter inline-six features twin SU carburetors and was rebuilt by British Auto Repair of Carmichael, California in July 2021. The choke cable, hoses, water pump, and thermostat were replaced in November 2021. An oil change was performed and the spark plugs were replaced in May 2022.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with an electronically actuated overdrive unit. The transmission was overhauled in July 2021, and a replacement exhaust system was installed in November 2021. Corrosion is evident on underside chassis components.
The owner has historical photos of the car, along with records totaling $21,750 from the 2021 and 2022 services.

Lot #217890
This 1966 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III was purchased by its prior owner in 1968 and remained with them for the next five decades. It underwent engine and transmission rebuild as well as other mechanical work that totaled over $20k in 2021 and 2022 before being acquired by the current owner on BaT in October 2022. Subsequent updates have involved re-trimming the seats in blue vinyl along with replacing the walnut wood dash, carpets, and tires. Finished in black with a black soft top and top boot, the car is powered by a 2.9-liter inline-six fitted with dual SU carburetors and mated to a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive. It rides on 15″ knock-off wire wheels and is further equipped with front disc brakes, a stainless-steel exhaust system, and 2+2 seating. This 3000 BJ8 is now offered on dealer consignment in Monterey, California, at no reserve with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, service records, spare parts, and a clean California title in the owner’s name.
The car left the factory finished in Healey Blue and underwent a color change to black in the late 1970s. Features include a black soft top and top boot matching boot cover along with a hood scoop, a driver-side mirror, vent windows, and chrome bumpers and trim. The selling dealer notes paint bubbling that can be viewed up close in the gallery.
Silver-painted 15” wire wheels are secured by two-eared knock-off spinners and were mounted with 165-width Michelin XZX tires under current ownership. An older spare with a matching Michelin tire is stored in the trunk. Braking is handled by front discs and rear drums.
The seats were reupholstered in blue vinyl with patterned inserts and contrasting piping under current ownership. Additional work has involved installing a replacement walnut wood dashboard and blue carpets. The 2+2 cabin is further equipped with a Sony cassette radio, a dash-mounted rearview mirror, and lap belts for all four occupants. The selling dealer notes difficulty operating the passenger-side window.
A banjo-style steering wheel fronts black-dial Smiths instrumentation including a 140-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer and auxiliary readouts. The water temperature and fuel level gauges were rebuilt in November 2021. The five-digit odometer has rolled over and now shows 59k miles. Approximately 300 miles have been added under current ownership, and total mileage is unknown.
The 2.9-liter inline-six featured dual SU HD8 carburetors from the factory for a rating of 150 horsepower and 173 lb-ft of torque. This engine was rebuilt by British Auto Repair of Carmichael, California, in July 2021, and the water pump, thermostat, and choke cable were replaced later that year.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with Laycock de Normanville electric overdrive. The transmission was overhauled in July 2021, and a Tourist Trophy stainless-steel exhaust system was installed in November 2021. Corrosion is visible on various underside components.
The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate indicates that the car was built in September 1965, and lists factory serial numbers, colors, and equipment.
