This 1966 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III is a non-running project car that was acquired by the seller in 1977, and it is said to have been placed in storage in 1995 and has not been driven or started since that time. The car is finished in green over black upholstery, and the 2.9-liter inline-six is mated to a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive. Equipment includes a black soft top and boot, 15″ knock-off wire wheels, power-assisted front disc brakes, dual SU carburetors, and Smiths instrumentation. This 3000 BJ8 Mk III project is now offered at no reserve in Maryland with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, owner’s handbooks, spare parts, and a clean Florida title in the seller’s name.

The car left the factory finished in British Racing Green and reportedly has undergone repair work to the right-rear corner and to the dogleg sections behind the doors. Equipment includes a replacement black soft top and boot, twin exhaust tips, and a driver-side mirror. The windshield is cracked, the front bumper is absent, the rear bumper is bent, the headlight trim is dented, and the hood finish is failing. Sections of corrosion are noted behind the doors, and dents, dings, and stone chips are present throughout the body.

Two chrome and two silver-finished 15″ wire wheels are secured with two-eared knock-offs and are mounted with radial tires that have not been replaced in decades. A matching silver-finished spare tire is included in the sale. The braking system is composed of front discs and rear drums.

The 2+2 cockpit features front bucket seats and a contoured rear bench trimmed in black upholstery that exhibits wear. Wood veneer trim adorns the dashboard, and additional equipment includes a heater, front lap belts, a dash-mounted rearview mirror, and an MGA-branded cassette radio. Wear is also noted on the door panels, center console, carpeting, and wood trim.

The banjo-style steering wheel is cracked and sits ahead of Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 140-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 94k miles, approximately 70k of which were added under current ownership; true mileage is unknown.

The 2.9-liter inline-six is topped with dual SU carburetors. The engine ran most recently in 1995, when issues with vapor lock occurred, according to the seller.

The car is equipped with a four-speed manual transmission with an electrically actuated overdrive unit. Rust is evident on the left floorboard near the firewall and elsewhere on the underside.

The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate shows a build date in November 1965 along with factory colors and serial numbers. Owner’s manuals, spare parts, a jack, and a knock-off hammer will also accompany the vehicle.

Sold for $17,000 on 2/7/24

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
