This 1967 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III was built in April 1966 and originally delivered to Chicago, Illinois. The car was purchased by the seller from its reported original owner’s estate in 2001, and a refurbishment completed in 2014 is said to have included repainting the exterior, reupholstering the interior in red leather, and rebuilding the tachometer, as well as replacing the front disc brakes, stainless-steel exhaust system, and wire wheels. Power is supplied by a 2.9-liter inline-six mated to a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive. This BJ8 is now offered with a copy of the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, parts receipts, refurbishment photos, and a clean Illinois title in the seller’s name.

The car was repainted in its factory shade of Ivory White under current ownership and features a black soft top. The seller states that the body was stripped to bare metal prior to paint, the rocker panels were replaced along with the chrome trim, and that the refurbishment was completed in 2014.

Replacement chrome-finished 15″ wire wheels with knock-off hubs are wrapped in 175/80 BFGoodrich Touring T/A tires. The front brakes are fitted with dual-piston calipers and cross-drilled rotors.

The 2+2 interior was originally trimmed in black according to the BMIHT certificate, and it was reupholstered in red leather with matching door cards and carpeting during the refurbishment. Additional amenities include a wooden shift knob, roll-up windows, and an AM radio.

A Moto-Lita wood-rimmed steering wheel fronts factory instrumentation including a 140-mph speedometer, a rebuilt 7k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer displays just over 85k miles, approximately 500 of which have been added by the seller.

The 2.9-liter inline-six is equipped with dual SU carburetors; a “29E” tag on the engine indicates that it was originally fitted to a BN7 or BT7 Austin-Healey built in 1961 or 1962. The engine was reportedly rebuilt during prior ownership, and the seller had the carburetors rebuilt and performed additional engine work. The seller states that the oil was last changed in 2019.

Power is routed to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive. Replacement stainless-steel exhaust components can be seen above, and additional photos of the underbody are presented in the gallery below.

The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate indicates that the car was built in April 1966 and shipped to Chicago, Illinois. Factory colors, equipment, and powertrain numbers are also listed.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
