I'm trying to find out about the history of this car before it got imported into Germany in 1986.

In general it's better to contact the BJ8 Registry for information about the previous history of a BJ8. Healeydata is a good source for information, but it is completely passive; and you are depending on some former owner of the car to check in here and see your question. The BJ8 Registry has a "keeper" who is active in documenting history for BJ8s and contacting current owners to provide that information even if they have not asked for it.
Unfortunately, in this case the registry does not have any previous records for 38052. However, I have made a note that you are interested in the history of the car and if that should come to light I will contact you, provided I have valid contact information at that time.

The engine quoted (29K/RU/H7159 is the correct number) is not original to 38052, but to a car with chassis number somewhere around 324XX.

Spam prevention question (must be answered):
The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
