- The ultimate evolution of the "Big Healey"
- Underwent various work in 2019
- 5-speed gearbox, 4 disc brakes
The Austin Healey 3000 Mk III BJ8 began being manufactured at the beginning of 1964. This latest version saw its engine power increased to 148 bhp, while braking, suspension, steering and comfort features were all improved. After producing 1,389 examples, the company adopted a number of modifications, including increased ground clearance, improved rear axle steering, and thicker front brake discs... That's why the first 1,389 MK IIIs were referred to as phase 1, and subsequent models, like the one shown here, were labelled phase 2.
Sold new in the United States, it was imported into France in November 1988 and was acquired by its current owner in 2001. After being used regularly, this 'Big Healey' was entrusted to SPR Garage in 2019 to receive a new paint job in the classic combination of 'Healey Blue' with 'Old English White' flanks. The blue upholstery was also completely refurbished at the same time. On the mechanical side, the cylinder head was removed for inspection, and the upper engine gaskets were replaced, including a reinforced cylinder head gasket. The crankshaft oil seal has been replaced, as has the water pump, while the radiator has been refurbished. In terms of upgrades, discs have been fitted to the rear as on the last factory 1968 Big Healeys rally cars and a Borgwarner 5-speed gearbox has been fitted, while the 4-speed gearbox with overdrive will be available for collection from the owner. We were completely satisfied with our test drive: the powertrain works well, the handling is satisfactory, and the braking is powerful, while the gearbox is very pleasant to handle. This powerful BJ8 has been restored for optimum comfort and safety, so make the most of it!
