This 1961 Austin-Healey 3000 is one of 355 triple-carbureted Mk II BN7 two-seat roadsters built between August 1961 and March 1962, and was purchased Healey Lane of Riverside, California in the early 2000s, later undergoing a restoration completed by them in 2003. The car was purchased by the seller later in the year. It was sold to friends in 2004 and 2009, and acquired by its current owner, another friend of the seller, in 2014. Power is from a 3.0-liter inline-six that was rebuilt by GT Motorsports of Pewaukee, Wisconsin in 2007 and is mated to a side-shift four-speed manual transmission with overdrive. A tune-up was performed and new tires fitted in 2019. This Mk II BN7 is offered by the seller on behalf of its current owner in Wisconsin with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, records from 2003 to present, full weather equipment, a custom cover, and transferrable New York registration in the owner’s name.
Delivered from the factory in Colorado Red, the exterior color was changed to black during the restoration completed in 2003. Brightwork includes front and rear bumper overriders, dual mirrors, and fender beading. Cracks on either side of the hood scoop trim can be seen.
Painted 60-spoke 15″ knock-off wire wheels were fitted with Michelin XZX tires in 2019, and a spare is mounted behind the seats. Braking is handled by front discs and rear drums. A new black soft top and frame, side curtains, and tonneau cover are included in the sale.
Originally trimmed in red, the cockpit was reupholstered in factory-style black leather with matching carpets and red piping on the fixed-back seats and armrest during the restoration. A heater was optioned from new.
A banjo-spoke steering wheel on a factory adjustable steering column frames Smiths instrumentation including a 120-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and supplementary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 85k miles, 5k of which have been added since the seller’s original purchase in 2003, and 2,500 of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.
The 3.0-liter inline-six is fed by three SU HS4 carburetors and was rated at 132 horsepower when new. The engine was rebuilt by GT Motorsports in 2007 with new bearings, custom piston rings, bushings, and gaskets as well as machine work and balancing. A tune-up was performed in 2019.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission with an electrically-actuated overdrive unit. The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate indicates a May 29-June 6, 1961 build for the North American market as well as listing original colors and options.
