Lot #111896

This 1960 Austin-Healey 3000 BN7 Mk I is said to have spent much of its life in Arizona and was raced during the late 1970s through the mid 1980s before it was acquired by the seller in March 2023. The car is finished in red over red vinyl upholstery and is powered by a 2.9-liter inline-six mated to a four-speed manual transmission. Equipment includes racing-style windscreens, a vented hood with a scoop, front fender vents, 15″ knock-off wire wheels, front disc brakes, dual SU carburetors, a wood dashboard, an aftermarket steering wheel, and a heater. This 3000 BN7 is now offered with the removed windshield, a workshop manual, various trophies and Austin-Healey club patches, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.

The body is finished in red and is said to have received a driver-quality repaint under previous ownership. Exterior details include racing numbers and decals as well as a vented hood with a scoop, front fender vents, chrome bumpers, and racing-style windscreens. The seller notes that the driver’s door handle needs to be pulled out in order for the door to latch shut. Areas of missing and cracking paint along with other blemishes are pictured in the gallery below. The removed hood, windshield, and a soft top are included in the sale, and the seller notes the presence of rust on the convertible frame.

The 15″ wire wheels wear two-ear knockoffs and are mounted with Dunlop Racing tires. Stopping power is provided by front discs and rear drums. The seller states that the left-front control arm was replaced under previous ownership.

The cockpit houses two low-back bucket seats that are trimmed in red vinyl and were reportedly reupholstered under previous ownership. Additional interior features include a color-coordinated upper dash pad, door panels, and carpets along with a wooden shift knob and a heater. Torn and frayed upholstery and carpeting are visible.

An aftermarket wood-rimmed steering wheel frames a wooden dashboard panel that houses Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 120-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, a fuel level gauge, and a combination gauge with readouts for oil pressure and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 4k miles, approximately 150 of which were added by the seller. The odometer is said to have rolled over at least three times, thus total mileage is unknown.

The 2.9-liter inline-six features dual SU carburetors. An air scoop was added below the radiator and an oil change was performed in preparation for the sale.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. The seller notes rust underneath the trunk.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
