This 1960 Austin-Healey 3000 BN7 Mk I was delivered new to Los Angeles, California, and is said to have remained in the state until 1980, when it was sold and relocated to Michigan. Chassis HBN7L5887 was acquired by the seller as a non-running project in 1981 and subsequently underwent bodywork, a repaint, and additional mechanical service as part of a refurbishment completed in 1982. Finished in red, the car rides on 15″ Dayton knock-off wire wheels and wears a black soft top. Black leather–trimmed seats from Moss Motors are fitted inside, while power is provided by a 2.9-liter inline-six featuring dual SU carburetors. Further equipment includes a four-speed manual transmission, a Laycock de Normanville overdrive unit, and front disc brakes. This 3000 Mk I is now offered at no reserve with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, spare parts, and a clean Michigan title in the seller’s name.
The car underwent rust repair and was fitted with replacement sheet metal prior to being repainted red as part of the aforementioned 1982 refurbishment project. Further details include a hood scoop, a single bullet-style side mirror, and chrome bumpers with overriders. The seller tells us that the black soft top has shrunk and cannot be fastened at the rear corners. The windshield is cracked, and a replacement is included in the sale. Various chips and blemishes are visible around the body.
The 15″ Dayton wire wheels are secured with two-ear knockoffs and mounted with 175-width Michelin X tires with 1990 date codes. Braking is handled by front discs and rear drums. Work under current ownership in 2011 is said to have involved rebuilding the calipers and replacing the brake lines. The seller notes that the parking brake requires adjustment and reports a leak from the rear brake lines.
Trimmed in black leather with red piping, the Moss Motors–sourced bucket seats were added in 2000, while replacement carpets were fitted in 2009. The seats are accompanied by lap belts, while the dash wears wood trim. Further details include a dash-mounted rearview mirror as well as a retrofitted parcel tray and door pockets. The retained Smiths heater does not work, and the seller recommends replacing the windshield and dash topper.
A banjo-style steering wheel frames Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 120-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, an inoperative fuel-level readout, and a combination gauge displaying oil pressure and water temperature. The speedometer was refurbished by Nisonger Instruments in 2013. The five-digit odometer is said to have rolled and now shows just over 1k. Approximately 8k miles are said to have been added under current ownership.
The 2.9-liter inline-six featured dual SU HD6 carburetors from the factory for a rating of 137 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. The seller tells us that the rocker shaft was replaced in 1982, a replacement fuel pump was installed in 1992, the rear main seal was replaced in 2008, and the radiator was re-cored in 2009. The oil pan was removed and cleaned in 2020 prior to an oil change.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with an electrically actuated Laycock de Normanville overdrive unit. The overdrive unit is noted to have been repaired in 1990, while the clutch assembly and pressure plate were reportedly replaced in 2000.
The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate indicates a build date between December 7-8, 1959, for the North American market as well as listing original colors and options.
