As the accompanying Heritage Certificate confirms, this triple-carb MkII 2+2 was built in October 1962 and was despatched to Florida later that month. Originally Colorado Red with red trim and a black hood, equipment included overdrive, wire wheels, heater and an adjustable steering column.

Although there is precious little documentation relating to the car's time in America, we are told that the original owner was a Cadillac dealer who used the car as his daily driver for six years before it developed a gearbox fault. It was then parked up at the back of his showroom where it was to remain for the next four decades.

When the first owner passed away about 10 years ago, the Healey was acquired by a second owner at which point it reputedly had only 43,000 miles on the clock and was still in exceptionally sound and original condition.

It was then sympathetically restored including a high quality repaint in the original Colorado Red and an equally high quality retrim in red leather. It was then used only sparingly, covering another 2,000 miles before being acquired by the vendor in 2014 and brought back to England.

Shortly after arrival in the UK the car was sent to marque specialist Chris Everard at JME Healeys of Warwick for a thorough check-over to address any faults. This resulted in a considerable bout of expenditure including: a full gearbox rebuild; new clutch kit; all three carburettors stripped and rebuilt; full service; new headlights and bulbs; new aluminium fuel tank and sender unit plus various other minor items at a cost of £4,762 (invoice on file).

The vendor was not entirely happy with the gearbox rebuild so he then sent it to Universal Transmissions of Kidderminster for some further fettling, the overdrive unit also being sent to Overdrive Services of Rugby to be reconditioned. The car was also converted to RHD by Healey specialist Peter Ellis of Northampton. A new black hood and new Perspex sidescreens were also fitted.

Since then the car has been kept as part of a small private collection and sparingly used in fine weather only, old MOTs showing that it has only covered 414 miles since it was imported, the odometer currently displaying some 45,600 miles which is believed to be correct.

As you can see the car is a really fine specimen and appears as good underneath as it is up top. The paint and brightwork are excellent and the red leather interior is particularly pleasing being wonderfully soft and supple.

Indeed the closer you look, the better it gets, with every nut, bolt and bracket inside the door apertures looking as fresh as the day it left the factory. The chrome wire wheels look equally good and are shod in a matching set of quality Vredestein tyres.

Having been treated to an extended test drive on the occasion of our visit to take these photos, we can also confirm that the car drives as well as it looks, starting instantly and running beautifully with excellent oil pressure, a notably smooth and quiet engine and exemplary ride quality for a Healey, barrelling down bumpy country lanes in impressively sure-footed style with not a rattle or squeak to be heard.

A real stickler for detail, the vendor confirms our positive impressions of the car, stating that the only fault he is aware of is the fuel gauge which tends to over-read showing more fuel than is actually present - worth knowing before you undertake any long journeys!

Documentation includes a V5C, US Certificate of Title, various invoices for work carried out since arrival in the UK, Heritage Certificate, five old MOTs and a current MOT valid until June 2018 with only a couple of minor advisories ('n/s/f axle king pin has slight play; steering system has slight free play at steering wheel') which have since been rectified.

Perhaps the nicest example we have ever offered, this sparkling 'matching numbers' Healey 3000 is highly original in all important respects, drives as well as any we have experienced and is sure to bring a great deal of pleasure to its fortunate new owner.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
