This 1960 Austin-Healey 3000 BT7 Mk I was dispatched to Chicago, Illinois, in September 1959 and has been repainted in metallic blue with white stripes over black leather upholstery. Power is supplied by a 2.9-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission and overdrive, and other equipment includes dual SU carburetors, 15″ wire wheels, front disc brakes, aftermarket headlamps, dual Talbot side mirrors, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, and an AM/FM push-button radio. The car was refurbished under prior ownership and was acquired by the current owner out of an estate in 2019. This 3000 Mk I is now offered at no reserve by the seller on behalf of the owner with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, side curtains, two soft tops and tonneau covers, and a clean Minnesota title in the owner’s name.
Finished from the factory in Healey Blue, the car has been repainted in metallic blue, with white stripes extending over the top of the car from the front bumper to the rear. Features include aftermarket headlamps, body-color A-pillars, dual Talbot side mirrors, a locking fuel cap, and dual exhaust outlets. Two worn soft tops and tonneau covers will accompany the vehicle along with aged side curtains, as pictured in the gallery below. The seller notes chipped paint, an “orange peel” finish, and evidence of body filler having been applied.
Silver-painted 15″ knock-off wire wheels are mounted with 165HR15 Vredestein Sprint Classic tires; a spare wire wheel with a Michelin tire is stored in the trunk. Braking is handled by front discs and rear drums.
The 2+2 cabin features bucket seats that have been retrimmed in black leather. The wood shift knob has a Playboy bunny logo, and other interior appointments include a Chrysler AM/FM push-button radio, under-dash speakers, a cabin heater, door-panel pockets, black carpeting, and rubber floor mats. The rubber shift boot is broken.
The wood-rimmed steering wheel is attached to an adjustable column and frames Smiths white-dial instrumentation consisting of a 120-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, a fuel-level gauge, and a combination gauge displaying oil pressure and water temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 42k miles, approximately 1k of which were added under current ownership.
The 29D 2.9-liter inline-six featured dual SU HD6 carburetors from the factory for a rating of 137 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. The oil was changed under current ownership.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with Laycock de Normanville electric overdrive; the overdrive unit operates inconsistently, according to the seller, who also notes that the gearbox has worn synchromesh and needs to be manually held in reverse gear. Leaks and corrosion are noted on underbody components, with some rust penetration and body filler evident.
The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate shows factory equipment and specifications, and it also indicates that the car was dispatched to Chicago on September 14, 1959.
Car number HBT7L3640 is shown on the tag, whereas the VIN listed on the Minnesota title is missing the “HBT7L” prefix.
