Private Party Or Dealer: Dealer
This 1953 Austin-Healey 100 BN1 roadster was purchased by the late owner in 1983 and converted for racing use. It competed in VARA and SCCA events until 2011 and is finished in red with white accents. Power is from a 2.7-liter inline-four paired with a three-speed manual transmission, and modifications include a plexiglass low-profile windshield, wing-mounted mirrors, a removable hood panel with hood pins, removed bumpers, a roll bar, and fixed-back racing seats. Additional equipment includes a Lecarra steering wheel, an onboard fire-suppression system, front disc brakes, an electric fuel pump, and an aluminum fuel cell, the latter of which requires replacement. This BN1 race car is now offered on dealer consignment at no reserve with a spare factory-style black seat, a car cover, a spare steering wheel, a knock-off hammer, racing logbooks, and a clean California title listing the engine number as the VIN and the car as a 1954 model.
The body is finished in red with a white #8 livery and features a black roll bar with triangulated supports, bullet-style mirrors mounted to the front wings, and a plexiglass low-profile windshield. The front and rear bumpers have been removed, and the hood has been modified for quick removal and is now held in place with hood pins. Uneven hood gaps are noted.
15″ wire wheels are finished in silver with chrome knock-offs and are wrapped in 185/65 Hoosier Speedster tires. Disc brakes have been installed on the front and are paired with rear drums. The car rides on an independent front suspension with coil springs along with a live rear axle with leaf springs. Maintenance in August 2020 included replacement rear wheel cylinders, at which time it was noted that the rubber suspension bushings need service.
The cockpit features an aluminum fixed-back driver’s seat upholstered in black cloth, a fixed-back passenger seat upholstered in black vinyl, and RaceQuip harnesses. An onboard halon fire-suppression system is fitted, and a custom dash plate houses switches for the electric fuel pump and electric radiator cooling fans. One spare factory-style seat upholstered in black vinyl will accompany the car.
The three-spoke Lecarra steering wheel frames Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 120-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, and gauges for oil pressure, water temperature, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 3k miles, and true mileage is unknown.
The 2,660cc inline-four features twin SU carburetors and was factory rated at 90 horsepower. Service in August 2020 included an oil change, a coolant exchange, and a replacement battery. An aluminum fuel cell is mounted in the trunk, although it is said leak and requires replacement. An electric fuel pump is fitted, and the car currently runs using a temporary fuel can.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed manual transmission. The exhaust system utilizes a tubular header and exits ahead of the left rear wheel. The selling dealer has provided a start-up video below.
