Lot #79193

This 1956 Austin-Healey 100 BN2 roadster was completed on January 9, 1956 as a North American–market example, and it is listed on British Motor Industry Heritage Trust (BMIHT) and Austin-Healey 100M “LeMans” Registry certificates as one of 640 factory-built 100M-specification cars produced during a 10-month run. The car is powered by a 2,660cc inline-four mated to a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive and has been refinished in its factory two-tone colors of white and black over black leather. It was listed on BaT in October 2021 and withdrawn prior to the auction’s close while the seller sought to further authenticate the vehicle. Service in the interim is said to have included changing the fluids. This Healey is now offered in Connecticut with service records, an owner’s handbook, wheel tools, side curtains, an upholstered transmission-tunnel cover, photos depicting the car as it appeared previously, BMIHT certificates, an Austin-Healey 100M “LeMans” Registry Certificate of Membership, and a Massachusetts title.

The car has been repainted on multiple occasions, most recently returning the body to its two-tone factory colors of white and black. Exterior features include a replacement soft top, fender-mounted mirrors, badge-bar-mounted driving lights, and chrome bumpers with overriders. The louvered hood features leather hold-down straps, which are said to have been previously removed and positioned incorrectly when reinstalled. A photo that reportedly shows the original and current strap-mounting holes on the underside of one fender is visible.

Silver-painted 15″ wire-spoke wheels wearing Dunlop SP 20 A/S tires are secured by two-eared knock-off nuts. Braking is handled by drums that were adjusted and bled in June 2021. Some corrosion of the spokes is noted by the selling dealer.

The cockpit features white-piped black leather upholstery with matching door panels and carpeting. Additional features include a heater, a dashboard-mounted rearview mirror, and embroidered “Austin-Healey” carpeted floor mats. A replacement “100M ‘Le Mans’ Registry” plaque has been affixed to the dashboard adjacent to a chrome passenger grab handle. The black convertible top stows behind the seats, and an upholstered transmission-tunnel cover is included in the sale.

A banjo-style steering wheel fronts a silver panel with Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 120-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, and gauges for oil pressure, water temperature, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 37k miles, and true mileage is unknown.

The 2,660cc inline-four would have been factory rated at 110 horsepower in 100M trim, which included a high-lift camshaft, an aluminum intake manifold, an aluminum cold-air box, 8.1:1-compression pistons, and dual SU carburetors, the last item of which are replacements in this instance. The engine is said to have been rebuilt under previous ownership, and a replacement engine-number tag has been affixed by screws rather than rivets. The water pump, distributor cap, rotor, spark plugs, and ignition wires were replaced by the selling dealer in early 2021.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a rebuilt four-speed manual transmission with overdrive.

Photos depicting the removal of paint to reveal the body number (11889) stamped into the hood’s left lip.

The car was previously listed on BaT in October 2021 and was subsequently withdrawn while the seller sought further authentication of its status as a 100M, which is now presented in the form of a Certificate of Membership in the 100M “Le Mans” Registry. The certificate is signed by Registry founder William Meade and dated March 2022, and it states that having verified by examination of the body numbers, carburetors, key, and distributor, the Registry confirms and accepts car/chassis #BN2-L/230411 with engine #1B/230411 and body #5690/11889 as a “Genuine Factory-Built Austin Healey 100M ‘LeMans’.” It is also noted on the certificate that the distributor number is incorrect and that the carburetors appear to be replacements.

The Massachusetts title describes the car as a 1956 Austin Lemans coupe.

• Desirable and rare factory 100M Le Mans Healey

• Listed in the 100M Le Mans Registry

• Comprehensive restoration performed

• Retaining matching numbers engine

• Mille Miglia eligible

• Offered with sizable history file, Heritage and Le Mans Registry Certificates

Offered here is an extraordinary example of the increasingly popular and rare, factory 100M Le Mans Healey, eligible for some of the most prominent motoring events around the globe. According to its Heritage Trust Certificate, this fine Austin-Healey was completed at the Longbridge Austin-Healey works on January 9, 1956. A BN2 model, this example benefits from having been factory equipped with the 100M Le Mans package including cold air intake, and other performance enhancing details. Furthermore, it featured the four-speed manual transmission, and the numerous smaller improvements implemented during the course of production since the introduction of the BN1 in 1953. This left-hand-drive Austin-Healey was equipped with a heater, louvered hood and a laminated windscreen from the factory. It was finished in two-tone Ivory White and Black, over black upholstery and weather equipment. During the restoration, white piping was added to the seating. Like most of these iconic British roadsters, this Left-Hand Drive 100M was destined for the North American market.

Recently returning the body to its two-tone factory colors of white and black, the car presents very well and shows little use since the completion of the refurbishment. Exterior features include a new soft top, fender-mounted mirrors, badge-bar-mounted driving lights, chrome bumpers with overriders, all accessories, books, tools and drop-in wind deflectors. This Le Mans shows four owners since new. All inner body moldings, louvered hood and rear trunk lid have correct and original stampings. Used multiple times during 2021 and 2022 for local concours events and gatherings. Very reliable, and eligible for nearly any vintage race or rally.

This fine example of one of Britain's most iconic roadsters looks and performs like a true sports car should. Equipped with the desirable 100M Le Mans upgrades from the factory, this Healey is true to the model's performance heritage, and would be a wonderful entry on a number of classic car driving events and rallies. The Healey's engine and body tags are still intact and match the Heritage Trust Certificate. Overall, this wonderful example of Austin-Healey's excellent 100M should offer its next owner much joy and driving excitement. Recent service includes fluids changed, head gasket, carbs cleaned and readjusted, correct 100M distributor located and installed, overdrive unit serviced, brakes serviced, water pump, various ignition parts replaced. The car had work to exterior/interior done in 2020 and the engine / mechanicals serviced in 2021 and 2023.

Extensive documented ownership history includes vehicle registrations, transfers of ownership, bills of sale, and titles that date back to 1972. British Motor Industry Heritage Trust documentation throughout multiple owners, in period photographs of Donald Healey and previous 100M owner. The highly regarded Bill Meade letter of certification and induction to Healey 100M registry, current as of 2023. Chassis BN2-L/230411 successfully graded / awarded a lifetime membership in registry. In addition to the aforementioned history and restoration file, this 100M Le Mans is offered with owner's handbook,100M Le Mans Registry Certificate, and the British Motor Industry-issued Heritage Trust Certificate. Mille Miglia eligible, the classic 100M Le Mans Healey remains one of the most popular mid-century sports cars ever produced, and this fine example deserves serious consideration. Having been recently imported into Europe, the car comes with its old US Title and EU-import duties paid.
