Lot #74164

This 1967 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III was acquired by the seller in 2001 and underwent a six-year body-off refurbishment started in 2015 that included a repaint in blue over a reupholstered black leather interior and an overhaul of its 2.9-liter inline-six. Equipment includes a black soft top, a four-speed manual gearbox with electric overdrive as well as triple Weber carburetors, a Carter fuel pump, an alternator conversion, an electronic ignition, halogen headlights, Lucas driving lamps, LED dash lights, a Moto Lita steering wheel, a 2″ lowering kit, and 15″ wire wheels. This BJ8 is now offered in Canada with refurbishment records, a car cover, a boot cover, full- and half-tonneau covers, a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, and Ontario registration in the seller’s name.

The body was disassembled and stripped, the rocker panels, rear seat tubs, and floor pans were replaced, and epoxy primer was applied prior to a 2020 two-stage repaint in Healey Blue (BU2). Features include a refurbished convertible frame and black vinyl soft top, chrome bumpers with overriders, a badge bar, Lucas driving lamps, halogen headlights, and dual chrome exhaust tips. Photos of a paint crack on the hood, a pair of nicks on the fender tops abutting the hood, and another couple of nicks on the driver-side quarter panel.

Chrome 15” wire wheels secured with branded two-eared knock-off nuts wear 195/65 Continental tires that were mounted during the refurbishment. A refresh of the front disc and rear drum brakes included replacing the pads, rotors, master cylinder, reservoir, and wheel cylinders, as well as installing stainless-steel hoses and copper nickel lines. A 2″ lowering kit has been installed, and suspension work included replacing the wheel bearings and seals, the bushings, and the shocks at both ends along with the king pins up front.

The 2+2 cockpit features front bucket seats and rear cushions that were reupholstered in black leather with pleated inserts as well as a matching vinyl dash pad, replacement door panels, and replacement carpeting overlaid by branded floor mats. Amenities include front three-point belts, a heater, walnut dash trim, a wooden shift knob, a glovebox, an upholstered center armrest, and a telescoping rearview mirror mounted on the dash. The trunk liner was replaced.

The wood-rimmed Moto Lita steering wheel sits atop an adjustable column and fronts Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 140-mph speedometer, a tachometer with a 5,600-rpm redline, and gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, and oil pressure. The five-digit odometer shows 31k miles, 100 of which were driven since completion of the refurbishment in 2022. True mileage is unknown. The dash lights have been converted to LED bulbs.

The 2.9-liter inline-six was overhauled in 2016 by TDC Engines of Kingston, Ontario, and work at that time included:

Resurfacing and balancing the crank- and camshafts

Boring the cylinders 0.30″ over

Rebuilding the cylinder head with replacement valves, guides, springs, tappets, and push rods

Replacing the timing chain, tensioner, and sprockets

Replacing the bushings, bearings, and seals

Replacing the oil pump

All three Weber 45DCOE carburetors have been rebuilt, a Filter King fuel filter was added, and an alternator conversion kit was installed along with an MSD 6AL ignition module, a Mallory electronic distributor, a Lucas Sport coil, and a high-torque starter. The radiator was refurbished, the water and fuel pumps were replaced, and a performance header and exhaust system was installed. A spin-on oil filter adapter and an oil cooler were added as were an alloy oil pan and branded valve cover.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox with a switch-activated Laycock electric overdrive and a rebuilt differential with a replacement 3.50:1 ring-and-pinion assembly. A refresh of the clutch included replacement of the master and slave cylinders, pressure plate, clutch disc, and release bearing.

The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate indicates that the car was dispatched to the United States on October 19, 1966, and lists the serial numbers, colors, and equipment along with the build date and destination.

The number 67 has been added ahead of the stamped VIN on the registration.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
