Car at auction 9/22
www.broadarrowauctions.com/vehicles/tj22_019/1967-austin-healey-3000-mk-iii-bj8

Auction description:
1967 Austin-Healey 3000 Mk III BJ8
Lot 510 | Passion for the Drive: The Cars of Jim Taylor | Estimate $75,000 - $95,000
Chassis No. H-BJ8-L/42074
Body No. 86939

One of the best-known British sports cars of the 1960s, the Austin-Healey 3000 is fondly known as the 'Big Healey' for its combination of a comfortable interior surrounded by a full top and roll-up windows, well-suited to American tastes, and powerful six-cylinder engine. It was produced in several different series and variations, all of which remain very popular.

The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust (BMIHT) Certificate on file identifies the car as having been originally finished in these colors, Ivory White over Black Ambla interior and top, and supplied to the States in July 1967. It was originally equipped with overdrive, a heater, adjustable steering column, laminated windshield, black tonneau cover, and wire wheels, all of which is still present along with an AM/FM radio. As one of the final Austin-Healey 3000s produced it has several late-production features, including a distinctive badge without the usual cloisonne trim.

Jim Taylor acquired the Austin-Healey in Florida in 1990, and has now been its owner for 32 years. Obviously well-cared-for over its life, the car's exterior surfaces were refinished in the correct color many years ago and fitted with new carpets, but otherwise it remains in well-preserved original condition. It retains factory paint under the trunk lid, in the engine compartment, and within the door jambs, and the engine compartment is undetailed, with twin SU carburetors and upgraded air cleaners. The interior retains the original upholstery on the seats, including the fold-down rear seat. At the time of cataloging the car recorded 45,783 miles. Accompanying is the original tonneau cover, top boot with bag, spare wheel, and knock-off hammer, as well as a small history file.

This Austin-Healey has much to recommend it: good, sympathetic preservation, and patina that lends itself well to driving enjoyment.

We are very proud to offer this beautiful 1967 Austin Healey 3000 Mark III convertible finished in Ivory White with a Black Ambla vinyl interior and top. Powering this sharp driving Healey is a 2912cc inline 6-cylinder engine with twin SU carburetors and upgraded air cleaners mated to a 4-speed manual transmission with overdrive. This late production model was built in July and features a heater, adjustable steering column, black tonneau cover, 15" wire wheels, AM/FM radio, front disc brakes, Smiths gauges, wooden shift knob, chrome bumpers, folding rear seat, dashboard mounted rearview mirror, rubber mats, glovebox, laminated windshield, and a top boot.

This late production model shows 45,840 miles on the odometers and comes with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate. Being treated to a complete transmission overhaul in April 2023, this Austin Healey largely remains a well-kept original vehicle. The exterior surfaces were refinished in their factory appointed color by the previous owner who originally bought this Healey in 1990 and kept it for 30 plus years to enjoy sparingly in his large automobile collection. New carpets were installed but the upholstery on the seats including the fold down rear seat remains all original, as is the factory paint still found under the trunk lid, engine compartment, and door jambs. More recently, our museum upholstery shop fitted a new crush grain vinyl convertible top, along with a desirable cabin tonneau cover and new front seatbelts.

Our service department installed new engine side plate gaskets, gearbox oil seals, pinion seal, new radiator cap, oil filler cap, fresh spark plug wires, and new rear exhaust tips. Providing quick throttle response and excellent steering, it's easy to see why these inline 6-cylinder Austin Healey Mark III's are still so beloved to this day. If you're looking for a sporty driver or just a classic automobile that you can take out and enjoy, then look no further as this convertible!

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
