This 1960 Austin-Healey 3000 Mk I was sold new at A.F. McClellan Buick of La Mesa California in August 1959. It was reportedly garaged by the original owner in 1967 due to engine problems and stored until the original owner’s son had the car refurbished for his father beginning in 2008. Work included refinishing the exterior, refreshing the interior, and overhauling the engine. The car is finished in black over a red leather interior and is powered by a 2,912cc inline-six paired with a four-speed manual gearbox. The selling dealer reportedly acquired the car from the original owner’s son earlier this year. This BT7 roadster is now offered with 1959 sales paperwork, an owner’s manual with service notes, a BMIHT certificate, and a clean California title.
The exterior was refinished in factory black during the late-2000s refurbishment, and the car also received a replacement black soft top, side curtains, and a pair of driving lights mounted to the front badge bar.
15″ wire wheels with two-ear knockoffs were also installed at that time and are now mounted with 175/80 BFGoodrich Touring T/A tires. The trunk houses a spare wire wheel with a Vredestein tire, and a factory disc-style wheel is included in the sale and shown in the gallery. Other work during the refurbishment approximately 10 years ago reportedly included replacing components in the suspension and brake systems.
The BMIHT certificate shows that the car was originally delivered with a red interior. During the refurbishment the interior was reportedly refreshed with replacement door panels, carpeting, and leather seat covers.
A banjo-style steering wheel fronts factory Smiths instrumentation including a 120-mph speedometer and a 6k-rpm tachometer. The five-digit odometer shows just under 83k miles.
The 2,912cc C-series inline-six features dual SU carburetors and is paired with a four-speed manual transmission. The selling dealer reports that the engine was overhauled by Ed Hale during the late-2000s refurbishment. The fuel, coolant, and engine oil were drained and replaced by the selling dealer. The battery and fuel hoses were replaced alongside other parts that deteriorated while the car was stored. Per the selling dealer, the hydraulic clutch system was recently bled, and the carburetors and valves were also adjusted.
The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate shows that the car was originally dispatched to Los Angeles, California in May 1959 finished in black over a red interior. Factory options and assorted serial numbers are also listed on the document. The August 1959 sales invoice from A.F. McClellan Buick is viewable in the gallery and reflects that a 1956 Ford Victoria was accepted on trade-in.
