This 1955 Austin-Healey 100 was purchased by the seller as an incomplete roller in 2010, and it became the subject of a multi-year build that involved mounting the bodywork to a custom-fabricated steel chassis and installing a 289ci Ford V8, a FAST electronic fuel-injection system, a Tremec T-5 five-speed manual transmission, and a 9” rear end with a limited-slip differential. Completed in 2016, the car rides on adjustable coilovers with a Mustang II-style front suspension, a three-link setup with a Panhard rod, a Sweet Manufacturing steering rack, and four-wheel disc brakes. Highlights include a louvered hood, driving lights, dual Aero Screens, a roll hoop, American Racing 15” alloy wheels, black leather upholstery, and Smiths gauges. Following its completion, the car placed first in its class at the 2019 Central Coast British Car Show. This custom Austin-Healey is now offered with build photos and a California title in the seller’s name.
Modifications were engineered by drag car builder Steve Dragus, while assembly and wiring were executed by marque specialist Russ Thompson. The chassis was fabricated using rectangular, square, and round steel tubing by Ellery Engel Restoration Specialties in Piru, California. The front shock towers are connected to a loop under the front cowl, which is linked to a cage surrounding the transmission via adjustable struts. Steel plate was welded in to support the roll hoop, and a cross-braced structure was created for the rear suspension. The rear bulkhead and floors were formed from steel sheet, while aluminum sheet and aircraft-style rivets were used for the firewall. Photos taken at various stages of the build are included.
The 289ci Ford V8 is equipped with a FAST EZ-EFI electronic fuel-injection system, eight-stack induction, and an MSD 6AL ignition module, Pro-Billet distributor, and Blaster SS coil. A custom aluminum radiator is cooled by an electric pusher fan, and an oil cooler with braided lines has been added. Four-into-one headers flow into side exhaust pipes that exit ahead of the rear wheels. The seller reports that the car has been driven around 200 miles since its last oil change.
The body was repaired, and a louvered hood was added before a repaint in black. The hood is secured by a leather strap and 100S-style polished clamps, while the Lucas sealed-beam headlights feature “Le Mans 24” script cast into the glass. Driving lights are mounted to polished tubular brackets, and Austin-Healey accessory Aero Screens were installed along with a Wingard rearview mirror. Touched-up areas on the right-rear quarter panel and other flaws around the car are visible.
The car rides on adjustable coilovers all around, and the Mustang II-style front suspension utilizes tubular control arms, a sway bar, heim joints, and a Sweet Manufacturing rack-and-pinion steering rack.
The live rear axle is located by a three-link setup with a Panhard rod. A custom fuel tank was also installed along with a Tremec T-5 five-speed manual transmission and a 9” rear end with a limited-slip differential and 3.50:1 gearing.
American Racing 15” alloy wheels are wrapped in Toyo Proxes R888R tires. Braking is handled by four-wheel discs with dual master cylinders and a Speedway adjustable proportioning valve.
The cockpit houses low-back bucket seats trimmed in black leather that extends to the dashboard, center console, and door panels. The roll hoop has a removable brace that connects to the passenger footwell. Dynamat was applied to the floors under black rubber mats, and a fire extinguisher is stored behind the seats.
The wood-rimmed steering wheel sits ahead of Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 160-mph speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 2,300 miles.
An Optima Red Top battery with a cutoff switch is mounted in the trunk.
The car was awarded First Place in its class at the 2019 Central Coast British Car Show.
The chassis number BN1L221771 is shown above. The VIN is listed on the title as BN1222177. The title was recently corrected to address this issue, and it is in transit. There may be a delay in delivery as a result.
