This 1956 Austin-Healey 100 BN2 roadster was built in October 1955 and assigned for display at the Earls Court Motor Show in London. Chassis BN2L228717 was later dispatched to the US, where it underwent a repaint and an interior re-trim in the 1980s before being acquired by the seller in 2002. Subsequent work is noted to have involved rebuilding the dual SU carburetors, installing a stainless-steel exhaust system, rebuilding the drum brakes, and more as detailed below. Finished in Old English White with a black soft top over black vinyl, the car is powered by a 2.7-liter inline-four linked with a four-speed manual transmission and an electrically actuated overdrive unit. It is further equipped with 15″ knock-off wire wheels and an adjustable windscreen as well as a Smiths heater and instrumentation. This 100 is now offered with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, partial service records, and a clean Iowa title in the seller’s name.
The seller notes that evidence that the rockers were replaced prior to the car being repainted in Old English White in the early 1980s. They note that the windscreen, bumpers, and overriders were replaced under their ownership. The car is accompanied by a removable black soft top and side curtains. The soft-top window is discolored.
The 15″ wire wheels are secured by two-ear knock-offs and mounted with 165-width Mastercraft radial tires. The four-wheel drum brakes are said to have been rebuilt under current ownership.
Specified from the factory with “Special Green” upholstery, the interior was re-trimmed in the 1980s. The bucket seats are upholstered in black vinyl and accompanied by color-coordinated door panels and carpets. Further interior appointments include a Smiths cabin heater as well as a dash-mounted mirror and passenger-side grab handle. The turn signals are not working.
A banjo-style steering wheel frames Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 120-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. The oil pressure, water temperature, and fuel level gauges were rebuilt under current ownership. The five-digit odometer shows 4k miles. Approximately 4k miles are believed to have been added under current ownership, and true mileage is unknown.
The car is powered by a 2.7-liter inline-four that was equipped from the factory with dual SU carburetors. The seller tells us that work over their 24 years with the car has involved rebuilding the carburetors, replacing the ignition, reconditioning the radiator, repairing the fuel tank, and installing a stainless-steel exhaust system.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission paired with an electrically actuated overdrive unit. The seller notes rust on the backside of both inner rocker panels, also referred to as the “backside inner sills.”
The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate for chassis BN2L228717 lists factory identification numbers and colors and notes that it was a show car for the Earl’s Court Motor Show.
A composite image of various identification markings is included. The current Iowa title lists the VIN as BN211228717.
