This 1959 Austin-Healey 100-6 BN4 roadster is a running-and-driving project that was purchased by the seller’s brother-in-law in 1971, when the drivetrain was swapped for a Ford 289ci V8 and an automatic transmission. The car later sat outdoors in Palmdale, California, for more than 25 years before a refurbishment was undertaken circa 2010, with work including an exterior repaint in black, bodywork and repairs, replacement of the trunk lid and interior, and modification of the dash to accommodate AutoMeter gauges. Louvers were added to the hood, an electric water pump and a triple-bypass aluminum radiator with an integrated fan shroud were installed, the fuel tank and lines were replaced, and the engine was changed again, this time to a fuel-injected Ford 331ci stroker V8 paired with a Ford four-speed automatic transmission with a 3k-rpm high-stall torque converter. The engine features AFR aluminum cylinder heads, a Comp Cams roller camshaft, and ceramic-coated stepped headers. The vehicle rides on Dayton knock-off wire wheels and features a removable hardtop, a tinted Lexan backlight and side curtains, and a banjo-style steering wheel. The engine is said to start with the use of starting fluid but suffers from fuel starvation, and a leak is present at the intake-manifold gasket. This V8-equipped Healey project was acquired by the seller in 2024 and is now offered at no reserve with documentation and service records, spare parts, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.

The car was refinished in its current shade of black around 2005 and features a removable black hardtop, a louvered hood, chrome bumpers, and a driver-side mirror. The trunk lid is an aluminum unit that was installed under previous ownership, and the hardtop’s backlight and the sliding side curtains feature smoke-tinted Lexan. The chrome grille has a 3000 badge. A blemish is evident on the hardtop.

Bright-finished Dayton 15″ knock-off wire wheels that were purchased new in 2006 are mounted with BFGoodrich Traction T/A tires, and the seller reports that one tire no longer holds air. Braking is handled by hydraulically actuated drums at each corner, and a Mazda dual brake master cylinder has been adapted.

The 2+2 cabin features bucket seats that have been retrimmed in black upholstery that extends to the door panels and is complemented by black carpeting. Additional interior appointments include lap belts, a dash-mounted rearview mirror, a passenger-side grab handle, a heater, and door-panel pockets. The seller notes that some of the J-brackets for securing the hardtop are tarnished and also that the turn-signal stalk is faded.

The banjo-style steering wheel frames an instrument cluster that has been modified to accommodate AutoMeter gauges that include a 120-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary readouts for fuel level, water temperature, oil pressure, and voltage. The digital odometer indicates 5,500 miles, approximately 100 of which were added under current ownership. True mileage is unknown. The rim of the steering wheel is faded and cracked.

The 1992-manufactured Ford Windsor 331ci stroker V8 was installed during the 2010s and is outfitted with the following components:

Forged-steel crankshaft

H-beam connecting rods

Probe Industries high-silicon forged pistons

Molybdenum piston rings

Air Flow Research aluminum cylinder heads

Comp Cams Xtreme Energy hydraulic roller camshaft

Roller-tipped rocker arms

Mickey Thompson finned valve covers

Holley throttle-body fuel injection

Weiand Stealth dual-plane intake manifold

Meziere Enterprises electric water pump

Triple-bypass aluminum radiator with integrated fan shroud

Auxiliary electric “pusher” cooling fan

Replacement fuel tank and lines

Ford Taurus–sourced fusebox

Boyle Future Technology 140-amp alternator

Ceramic-coated stepped exhaust headers with equal-length runners

The seller tells us that there is a leak at the intake-manifold gasket and that the fuel injectors seem to be blocked, adding that the engine will start using a shot of starter fluid but soon will stall out due to fuel starvation. The oil was changed in 2023, and the car was driven most recently in March 2026.

An Austin-Healey 3.55:1 rear end receives power through a Ford AOD four-speed automatic transmission equipped with a 3k-rpm high-stall torque converter and a transmission cooler.

Documentation from the prior and current owners is presented in the photo gallery below.

Spare parts that will accompany the vehicle include an non-louvered hood, a 4.10:1 pinion/crown gear, a grille, and more.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
