This 1963 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ7 Mk II was delivered new through Royston Distributors Inc. of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and is believed to have spent time in Kentucky before being relocated to Texas circa 2014. Chassis HBJ7L/22948 was acquired by the seller on BaT in March 2022 and subsequently underwent steering, suspension, brake, and engine work, including installation of a replacement oil pump, electric fuel pump, carburetors, and tires. Finished in black over matching upholstery with red piping, the car is powered by a replacement 2.9-liter inline-six linked with a four-speed manual transmission and a Laycock de Normanville overdrive unit. Further equipment includes a black soft top and 2+2 seating, along with 15″ knock-off wire wheels and front disc brakes. This 3000 Mk II is now offered with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, a driver’s handbook, a service manual, recent service records, spare parts, and a clean Montana title in the name of the seller’s LLC.

The car left the factory finished in Healey Blue and was repainted black under previous ownership. It is accompanied by a black soft top and top boot, and further details include a hood scoop, a wing-mounted side mirror, dual bright exhaust finishers, and chrome bumpers with overriders. The windshield is scratched, the driver’s door is misaligned, and there are imperfections in the paint.

The knock-off 15″ wire wheels were re-chromed under previous ownership, and 165/80 Vredestein Sprint Classic tires were mounted in February 2024. The suspension utilizes front coils and rear leaf springs, while stopping power is provided by front discs and rear drums. Work following the seller’s acquisition has reportedly included replacing the front spindles as well as adjusting the steering box and bleeding the brakes.

The 2+2 cabin features bucket seats trimmed in black upholstery with red piping. Interior appointments include a Smiths heater along with a dash-mounted rear-view mirror, door storage pockets, and front lap belts. The floors were reportedly coated with a heat-insulating material under previous ownership, and the black carpets are loose-fitting. The shifter mechanism was adjusted in February 2024.

A banjo-style steering wheel frames Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 120-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and auxiliary gauges for oil pressure, water temperature, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 89k miles, approximately 500 of which were added by the seller. True mileage is unknown.

The replacement 2.9L straight-six was installed under previous ownership along with an electronic ignition and a finned aluminum oil pan. Work by Glenn’s MG Repair of St. Petersburg, Florida, in February 2024 involved the following:

Replacing the carburetors, starter, distributor, and oil pump

Changing the rod bearings and three of the main bearings

Resealing the oil pan

Installing NGK spark plugs

Converting the electrical system to a negative-ground setup

Installing a Facet electric fuel pump

Performing a timing adjustment

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission and an electrically actuated Laycock de Normanville overdrive unit that can be engaged in third and fourth gears via a dash switch.

The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate lists factory colors, equipment, and serial numbers along with a build date in March 1963. The document is accompanied by a Technical Data sheet.

The chassis tag indicates a vehicle number of HBJ7L/22948, while the Montana title lists the VIN as 22948.

Spam prevention question (must be answered):
The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
