It is estimated that this Austin Healey 3000 was frame off restored in the late 1990’s. It was then kept as a concours/ show car attending many regional and national show and conclave events up to 2007. The car then appears to have been in storage until 2018 when it came into the ownership of an Atlanta collector. The engine was rebuilt prior to the sale to the current owner. The Colorado Red paintwork is outstanding and matches the color as delivered from the factory. There is an included soft top, but the car is presently fitted with a rare “works” period correct hard top and alloy wheels.

The inside of the boot (trunk) lid is signed by Gerry Coker in 2001 and includes many show/ conclave magnetic badges.

The under body and frame remain in excellent condition, painted in the same Colorado Red.

The following work has been completed over the last two years.

Front suspension and steering assembly:

This 1964 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III was dispatched to the United States in January 1964, and it underwent a body-off refurbishment in the late 1990s before being owned and shown by a resident of the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Power is supplied by a 2.9-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive. The car is finished in Colorado Red over black Ambla vinyl, and it comes with a white hardtop and a black convertible top as well as Minilite-style 15″ alloy wheels and 15″ knock-off wire wheels. Denis Welch Motorsport engine and suspension parts have been adapted along with a custom exhaust system with side pipes. Other features include front disc brakes and rear drums, dual SU carburetors, a polished valve cover, a banjo-style steering wheel, a push-button radio, and lap belts. The seller purchased the vehicle in 2022, and the following year the transmission and overdrive unit were rebuilt and the clutch was replaced. In 2024, the front suspension, steering, and brakes were overhauled. Thermal insulation also was applied under current ownership. This BJ8 is now offered with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, spare parts, and a clean Texas title in the seller’s name.

Finished from the factory in Colorado Red, the car was repainted during the aforementioned refurbishment, according to the seller. The black convertible top is shown above, and the accompanying vented white hardtop is depicted in other photos, with the latter being currently installed on the vehicle. The Healey has black side-exit exhaust pipes; images that show dual chrome tailpipes are outdated, the seller notes. Other features include a black top boot, a black tonneau cover, a badge bar, a hood scoop, door-mounted side mirrors, bright trim, and chrome bumpers with overriders. The seller notes two cosmetic blemishes in the paint. Some of the images in the gallery were taken in 2024 or 2022.

Silver-finished S.C.P. KN 15″ knock-off aluminum wheels are currently fitted to the car and are mounted with Dunlop Signature II tires measuring 185/65. The suspension was updated under current ownership with the following components from Denis Welch Motorsport:

Uprated front sway bar

Front lowering kit (to eliminate positive camber)

Steering idler

Polyurethane suspension bushings also were installed, and other work under the seller’s stewardship involved replacement of the kingpins, spindles, and ball joints as well as the steering-box oil seals and gaskets.

Chrome-finished 15″ knock-off wire wheels with 165SR15 Michelin XZX tires also will accompany the vehicle; the wheels are pictured on the car above and in other non-current photos viewable in the gallery below. The brakes were overhauled in 2024 with replacement of the master cylinder, front pads and caliper seals, and the rear brake shoes and cylinders. In addition, the brake booster was diassembled and stainless-steel braided flex lines were fitted.

The 2+2 cabin features bucket seats trimmed in black Ambla vinyl. Interior appointments include a wood dashboard fascia, a push-button radio, a locking glovebox, a dash-mounted rearview mirror, a center console, front lap belts, black carpeting, and carpeted floor mats. The seller notes that interior upholstery has loosened in some areas.

The banjo-style steering wheel frames Smiths black-dial instrumentation consisting of a 140-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 84k miles, approximately 200 of which were added under current ownership.

The 2.9-liter inline-six featured dual SU HD8 carburetors from the factory for a rating of 150 horsepower and 173 lb-ft of torque. The engine was rebuilt around 2018 and has been updated with a Denis Welch Motorsport air cleaner plus a rear crankshaft seal and a low-profile finned oil pan from the same supplier. The custom exhaust system has Street Max stainless-steel mufflers. The seller notes an oil leak from the front timing case.

The four-speed manual transmission and its complementary Laycock de Normanville electric overdrive were rebuilt in 2023. A Borg & Beck clutch and pressure plate were installed during the same service, the seller tells us. The clutch cylinders also were replaced, as was the driveshaft assembly. The gearbox cover and interior floor were cleaned and repaired, and thermal insulation was applied before the cover was reinstalled using Nutserts. The gearbox input shaft leaks oil.

The removed oil pan, exhaust components, air cleaners, front sway bar, and other parts will accompany the vehicle along with a wiring diagram, books, and a tool kit.

The inside of the trunk lid was signed by Gerry Coker in 2001 and exhibits a number of show/conclave magnetic badges from the 1990s and 2000s.

The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate lists selected options and colors as well as dispatch to the United States on January 16, 1964.
