This 1964 Austin-Healey 3000 is one of approximately 1,390 “Phase 1″ BJ8 MK III examples produced, and following the current owner’s acquisition in 2002, it underwent a refurbishment completed in 2003 by Fourintune Garages of Cedarburg, Wisconsin. Work included a repaint in Old English White following body repairs, refinishing the frame, replacement of the 15” knock-off wire wheels, soft top, and side curtains, a retrim of the red interior, installation of dual fuel pumps, a Mallory distributor, and a Monza exhaust system, and an overhaul of the dual SU carburetors and four-speed manual transmission with overdrive. Powered by a 2.9-liter inline-six, the car also features front disc brakes, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, a cabin heater, and a Pioneer CD stereo. This 3000 Mk III is now offered on dealer consignment at no reserve with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, refurbishment records, and a Wisconsin title.
The included BMIHT certificate indicates that this car left the factory between April 6 and May 6, 1964, finished in Ivory White with a Black soft top.
During the aforementioned refurbishment, the body was separated from the frame, the front fenders and the cabin and trunk floor panels were replaced, and rust remediation was carried out on the lower sections of the inner front and rear wings prior to a repaint in Old English White. Various components were re-chromed, and the car was fitted with a replacement black soft top, side curtains, and tonneau cover, while the frame was sandblasted before being primed and painted.
The replacement 15″ knock-off wire wheels are mounted with Vredestein T-Trac tires, and stopping power is provided by front disc and rear drum brakes. The front shocks were rebuilt in 2002, and the selling dealer tells us the sway bar bushings were replaced in preperation for the sale.
The 2+2 cabin was reupholstered in red leather and vinyl by Fourintune Garages, who also refinished the wood veneer dashboard and installed front lap belts, a Pioneer CD stereo, and Sony speakers in the front footwells. The auxiliary blower-motor switch was replaced under current ownership, per the seller.
The wood-rimmed steering wheel was installed during the refurbishment, and frames Smiths black-dial instrumentation consisting of a 140-mph speedometer, a tachometer, a fuel-level gauge, and a combination gauge displaying oil pressure and water temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 34k miles, approximately 1k of which were added under current ownership. The tachometer cannot read above 3k RPM.
The 2.9-liter inline-six was factory rated at 150 horsepower and 173 lb-ft of torque. Work by Fourintune Garages included overhauling the dual SU HD8 carburetors, recoring the radiator, reconditioning the fuel tanks, and installation of dual fuel pumps, a replacement water pump, a Mallory Unilite distributor, and a Monza exhaust system.
The engine number shown on the tag “29KRUH1351”, corresponds with the sequence listed on the BMIHT Certificate.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with Laycock de Normanville electric overdrive that was overhauled in 2002 with a replacement clutch disc and pressure plate.
The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate shows factory colors and equipment and indicates that the car was dispatched to Baltimore on May 14, 1964. A December 2003–dated appraisal document from Fourintune Garage lists the car as a “Phase 1” example and details the refurbishment process. A 36-page document will accompany the car.
