This 1965 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III was purchased by the owner in 1989 and was subsequently refurbished in 1996 and 2022. It is finished in Black and Colorado Red over red leather and powered by a 2.9-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission with Laycock de Normanville electric overdrive. Equipment includes a black convertible top, a top boot, a tonneau cover, a hood scoop, a chrome rear luggage rack, California blue license plates, 15″ knock-off wire wheels, front disc brakes, and dual SU carburetors. This BJ8 is now offered by a BaT Local Partner on behalf of the owner with the owner’s manual, service records, a spare wheel, removed parts, and a clean California title in the owner’s name.
The car is finished in black and Colorado Red and features a top boot, a tonneau cover, a hood scoop, a chrome rear luggage rack, California blue license plates, bright trim, and chrome bumpers with overriders. The car was repainted in 1996 and the black convertible top was installed in 2020.
The 15″ knock-off wire wheels are mounted with 185/70 Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. Braking is handled by front discs and rear drums. The steering box was repaired in 2009, the brake shoes were replaced, the drums were resurfaced, and the handbrake bracket was welded to the frame in 2012, and the rear leaf springs were replaced in 2013. The seller states that all suspension bushings and the tie rods were replaced in 2024. A June 2024 service invoice notes that all four wheels are bent and need to be replaced, and a spare wheel with a broken spoke is included in the sale.
The 2+2 cabin was reupholstered in 1996 and features front bucket seats and rear individual cushions trimmed in red leather, along with a color-coordinated dashboard and door panels. Interior appointments include a locking glovebox, wood veneer dash trim, and an overdrive switch. Sound-deadening material and replacement carpets were installed, and the upper and
The banjo-style steering wheel frames Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 140-mph speedometer, a tachometer, a fuel-level gauge, and a combination gauge displaying oil pressure and water temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 63k miles, approximately 30k of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown, and the tachometer is inoperative.
The 2.9-liter inline-six is equipped with dual SU HD8 carburetors. In 2019 a timing cover reinforcement plate was installed, the valves and carburetors were adjusted, and the distributor was repaired. The engine was overhauled by British Car Specialists in 2022. Work involved machining the block and cylinder head, line-boring the block, grinding the valve seats, installing hard valve seats, and fitting a reground crankshaft, .030″-over main bearings, oversized pistons, and a replacement timing chain. The dual SU carburetors were overhauled, the engine bay was repainted, and the radiator, water pump, thermostat, clutch primary and secondary cylinders, and heater hoses were replaced at that time. The Duracell battery was replaced in 2023, and an oil change was performed and the idle speed was adjusted in 2024.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with Laycock de Normanville electric overdrive. The clutch was replaced in 2022.
The sale includes a tonneau cover, a jack and tool kit, a spare wheel, removed parts, and service records.
