This 1965 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III was delivered new to Rotterdam in the Netherlands in October 1965 and later sold through Belgian distributor Sogida in August 1967 to its first owner, a US serviceman stationed in Europe. Chassis HBJ8L/33316 was later shipped to the US in July 1968 and reportedly remained in storage in Connecticut and Florida until the spring of 1985, when the original owner had the cylinder head and clutch assembly serviced as part of recommissioning project. Recently acquired from the original owner by the selling dealer, the roadster is finished in Ivory White with a black soft top over red upholstery and powered by a 2.9-liter inline-six fitted with dual SU carburetors that is linked with a four-speed manual transmission and a Laycock de Normanville overdrive unit. It rides on 15″ knock-off wire wheels and is further equipped with Lucas driving lights, Secura Sprint mirrors, a Novak radio, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, and 2+2 seating. This 3000 Mk III is now offered by the selling dealer—a BaT Local Partner—with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, purchase documents, a service booklet, spare parts, a car cover, and a clean Pennsylvania title listing the car as a 1967 model.
The car left the factory finished in Ivory White (WT3). The selling dealer notes that the Lucas driving lights, Secura Sprint mirrors, dual license plate holders, and luggage rack were fitted to the car at the time of the original owner’s purchase in 1967. The black soft top was re-stitched under previous ownership, evidence of paintwork is noted on the left-rear quarter panel.
The 15″ wire wheels are secured by two-eared knock-offs and mounted with 165-width Michelin XZX tires. Braking is handled by front discs and rear drums.
The 2+2 cabin features bucket seats trimmed in red upholstery, and wood trim accents the dash. The selling dealer notes that a European-market headlamp flasher stalk and Novak Radiomatic SW radio were installed at the time of the original owner’s purchase in 1967. Further appointments include a Smiths heater, a locking glovebox, quarter-vent windows, and front seatbelts.
The split-spoke steering wheel features a wood rim and frames Smiths black-dial instrumentation consisting of a 140-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, a fuel-level gauge, and a combination gauge displaying oil pressure and water temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 39k miles.
The 2.9-liter inline-six featured dual SU HD8 carburetors from the factory for a rating of 150 horsepower and 173 lb-ft of torque. Records indicate that the cylinder was fitted with replacement valves and rebuilt as part of the 1985 recommissioning work. An oil change was performed in preparation for the sale.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with Laycock de Normanville electric overdrive. The clutch is believed to have been replaced in the course of the 1985 recommissioning project.
The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate lists factory colors and equipment and indicates that the car was completed on October 8, 1965, before being delivered to Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Purchase documents can be viewed in the gallery.
A Certificate of Acknowledgement issued in November 1996 by the Austin-Healey Club of America recognizing Continuous Ownership of chassis HBJ8L/33316.
A collection of vehicle literature, parts, and accessories will accompany the car.
