1966 Austin Healey 3000 MKIII
Estimate £40,000 - £50,000
Registration No: FHJ 344D
Frame No: HBJ8L34956
MOT: Exempt
Subject to an extensive no-expense-spared restoration with a host of desirable performance and usability upgrades
Purchased by the current owner in 2022 and still presenting as impressively as the day it was acquired
Fewer than 2,000 miles covered during current ownership and intended to be driven to the auction
This 1966 MkIII Phase 3 was imported from the USA and subsequently subjected to an extensive, no-expense-spared restoration. The engine was bored out and completely rebuilt, together with the overdrive gearbox, while the body was treated to a bare-metal respray.
The impressive mechanical specification includes a 9.3:1 compression ratio aluminium lead-free cylinder head, 123 electronic distributor, six-branch stainless-steel exhaust manifold, 80-amp alternator, high-torque lightweight starter, aluminium sump and rocker cover and a bespoke aluminium radiator. Further improvements include a new-old-stock 3.54:1 differential, MGF-derived power-assisted steering, four-pot Coopercraft brake calipers, an aluminium fuel tank and stainless-steel wire wheels.
The current owner purchased the Healey at auction in July 2022, at which time it was recorded as having covered just 1,874 miles since completion of the restoration. The odometer now displays approximately 3,837 miles, showing that fewer than 2,000 additional miles have been covered during the present ownership.
Finished in red with a black leather interior, the Healey continues to present extremely well and, in the vendor’s opinion, remains every bit as impressive as the day he acquired it. Testament to the confidence with which it is regarded, the car is intended to be driven to the auction.
Offered with its current V5C, Heritage Certificate and an extensive history file documenting the restoration and subsequent maintenance, this is a particularly well-presented, extensively restored and thoughtfully upgraded example of the ultimate development of the legendary ‘Big Healey’.
