This 1967 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III was completed in November, 1967, and delivered new to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Chassis H-BJ8-U/42836-G later underwent a body-off refurbishment in Canada that involved a repaint as well as rebuilds of the 2.9-liter inline-six and four-speed manual gearbox before being acquired by the seller in 1998 and relocated to Maryland. The car spent time in storage before recommissioning work by Vintage Restorations Limited of Union Bridge, Maryland, in 2024 totaling over $9k that included rebuilds of the dual SU carburetors, replacement of the fuel tank, and installation of Michelin XZX tires. Finished in Metallic Golden Beige with a black soft top, the car rides on 15″ knock-off wire wheels and is further equipped with front disc brakes, Laycock de Normanville overdrive, and a stainless-steel exhaust. Inside, 2+2 seating trimmed in black Ambla vinyl is accompanied by a BMC-branded AM radio as well as a Smiths heater and instrumentation. This 3000 Mk III is now offered with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, vehicle literature, records, tools, and a Maryland title in the seller’s name.

The car left the factory finished in Metallic Golden Beige (BG19) and was repainted in the course of the aforementioned refurbishment completed under previous ownership in Canada. It wears a black soft top accompanied by a color-coordinated top boot and tonneau cover, and further details include a hood scoop, bright trim, and chrome bumpers with overriders.

The 15″ knock-off wire wheels were mounted with 165-width Michelin XZX tires circa 2024, according to the seller. Braking is handled by front discs and rear drums.

The 2+2 cabin features bucket seats trimmed in black Ambla vinyl as well as replacement black carpets that were added as part of the refurbishment completed in Canada. Further interior appointments include a BMC-branded push-button AM radio and a Smiths heater as well as a dash-mounted mirror, a lockable glovebox, and quarter-vent windows.

A banjo-style steering wheel fronts a wood-trimmed dash housing Smiths black-dial instrumentation consisting of a 140-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, a fuel-level gauge, and a combination gauge displaying oil pressure and water temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 33k miles, approximately 1k of which were added under current ownership.

The 2.9-liter inline-six featured dual SU HD8 carburetors from the factory for a rating of 150 horsepower and 173 lb-ft of torque. The seller tells us that the engine was rebuilt in the course of the refurbishment completed in Canada, and that the carburetors were overhauled by Vintage Restorations Limited in 2024. A replacement battery and fuel tank were installed in 2024 along with an electric fuel pump.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with Laycock de Normanville electric overdrive. The gearbox was reportedly rebuilt as part of the refurbishment work completed in Canada, while the clutch cylinders were replaced in 2024 The car is further equipped with a stainless-steel exhaust system.

The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate lists the vehicle’s original specifications and delivery information.

A collection of vehicle literature, records, and tools is included in the sale.

The Maryland title carries a “Corrected Copy” notation.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
