Lot 011: Austin-Healey 3000 Mk I 2+2 (1960)

Exceptional Motor Cars, Christies (17th June 2000)

Lot Details

Auction Exceptional Motor Cars

Christies, Los Angeles sales centre, Los Angeles

Type Car

Lot Number 011

Estimate £40000-£50000

Hammer Price (inc premium) £64625

Condition rating 1

Chassis number HBT7L1941

Engine number 29DRUH2003

Black with red interior and black top

Engine: six cylinder, overhead valve, pushrod operation, 2,912cc, 124bhp at 4,600rpm; Gearbox: four-speed with overdrive on 3rd and 4th; Suspension: front independent coil springs, rear live axle, half elliptic springs; Brakes: front discs, rear drums. Left hand drive.

This 2+2 example has been comprehensively and professionally restored to the highest of standards; virtually everything that could be done by way of restoration has been attended to. The chassis was stripped to bare metal and blasted before being re-sealed and painted, and the panelwork was similarly prepared before being painted with three coats of catalyzed urethane black, power-buffed, polished and hand-glazed! All chromework was either replated or newly replaced, while the interior was retrimmed with correct style Connolly leather seats, new carpets, panel kit and new Everflex top and sidescreens. Both the style and finish has been done to correct factory colours and standards and with all correct detailing and appropriate decals and stickers. The car sits on 60-spoke upgraded chrome/stainless wheels with correct size Michelin radial tyres.

Mechanically the engine and transmission have been completely rebuilt which includes the starter, generator, etc. Other new parts include a new water pump, three-piece clutch, exhaust system and ignition system. The overdrive unit was fully examined and resealed. Other work was undertaken on the rear axle, suspension and brakes, all to the same high standards.

The Healey is offered with a BMIHT Certificate verifying that it was built on 12 June 1959 and destined for Los Angeles, so it is entirely fitting that forty years later, almost to the day, the car is offered for sale in Los Angeles. It is offered with all bills and a photographic record attesting to the restoration. We are pleased to recommend close inspection of the car.

Spam prevention question (must be answered):
The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
